The Algodones dunes are a natural wonder located in the Sonoran Desert. The dunes were formed by winds carrying sand east from ancient seabeds and lakebeds in California's imperial valley. The dunes move at a rate of approximately one foot a year, and have long been an impediment to human travel.
In 1877 the Southern Pacific Railroad built around the northern edges of the dunes at the foot of the Chocolate Mountains. Today, the line is part of Union Pacific's Sunset Route, and sees approximately 30-40 trains a day.
