I am a happily single 30 something guy and being single will make it easier to make life changing decision such as moving to other countries.

Hi Mario, you mentioned certain jobs that last for 7 years. Does that mean we don’t have a career for the whole life at the UN when we get a fixed term contract or that we just have to move to another duty station at the end of the fixed term? Thank you

Hello, permanent jobs at the UN are almost impossible to get. Some organizations will give you "permanence" after 10 years, but that's not easy to get, and you must be approved. On the other end, you will not lose your job unless the budget is cut or the post is not needed and they can't put someone else to do the same job. It is almost impossible to fire someone at the UN as well. You need to have 3 years with "does not meet expectation" in your staff evaluation or do something really bad to lose your job.

You mentioned at around 5 min in the video about only being able to stay at the duty station for 7 years and then you need to move. Can you please explain that a bit more? Why are you required to move if you are doing a good job?

That's the CTPTO and OAEA and UN organization that want to encourage mobility and staff rotation. It also prevents corruption in the long run as staff needs to move after 5-7 years. Don't forget, the UN is all about mobility.

hi, mario. I had a doubt related to this. Are there posts in the UN in which you can stay in the same city throughout your career? If yes, which ones are they? Also, if there are no such posts, do the people being posted have any choice about where and for how long they'll be posted?

Yes, almost ALL of them except the ones in Vienna for the IAEA, CTPTO and other "non-careerr" organizations.

@@MarioStingerPerpetualTraveller so the same organisations in any country other than Vienna would require you to move after a few years?

@@tulsidaskhan-g3f Ah, okay, my bad, maybe I should have made that distinction in my video. Only the admin staff need to move after 7 years. HR, Finance, Admin, Budget, Security etc... So, you are a Nuclear expert, and only IAEA can hire you, you don't have to move. And only admin is in Vienna. They don't have offices in other countries. I hope that helps.

Hello, look on un.careers.org and look for Haiti. I have been there, but never for work. If you speak French, it is will easy, if not, a little harder.

Hello Mario, first of all thank you for this series on UN jobs, it had been extremely informative. I would like to ask you about my chances of landing a UN job. I am originally from Syria, I hold a bachelor's degree in Englsih, and I live in Dubai. When I was living in Syria, I worked 3 different UN-adjacent jobs. 1) Was a teacher with a UNICEF-supported initiative for displaced children. 2) Was a field evaluation officer with for a local partner of the WFP. And 3) was a translator/senior liaison officer with local partner of UNMAS. I've been looking over UN vacancies but the sheer number and hight requirements of them is overwhelming. My question is, with this degree and these experiences, Do I have a chance of landing a UN job? If not, what do you think I should do to get one?

Hello, first as a Syrian you speak Arabic and English, so you have a good start in a country that is under-represented. You seem to have done a lot of different jobs. I think you need to niche out, and focus on one career choice for now. That way, you could have 5-10 years as a translator for example install of 2-3 in each field. To get short listed, make sure to take the time to tailor your CV and answer all the questions in the posting with details and that you have the minimum to apply. If they are 10 years in a French environment and you don't speak it, don't waste your time. That's about it, I think.
