Normally -or at least mostly - I agree with your conclusions on plugs, both positive and negative. But honestly, you dropped the ball on this test, as you didn’t really put it through any serious audible testing. I understand that it can be useful to graphically analyze plug ins and their various measurements of things like harmonics, frequency response, saturation, etc. But you spent far too much time nit picking about the GUI, and far too little time actually testing the audial response of music/tracks run through it. Your focusing on stuff that isn’t really important. And, FWIW, plenty of real preamps didn’t have separate two-stage gain control (output compensation). API, Neve, and a host of other hardware preamps had just one level control. Perhaps next time, you could consider going back to test practices by putting processors through the paces that matter the most to potential users, and then come to conclusions based on that - for good or bad - instead of judging solely based on graphic data, or worse, focusing on something as incidental and meaningless as the GUI of the virtual screws.

He could have done more listening but perhaps he felt it would have been just repeating exactly what he’s said in the past. I’d steer clear of any saturator that has a freq response like that regardless of what I can hear because I can tell it’s not going to do good things and there are much better quality saturators I could use

But...it's designed to go at the beginning of every track. I tried this and on each individual track, it didn't make much of a difference when dialed in correctly and sparingly. But...once on all the tracks, cumulatively there's a bigger difference, and it's a welcome one. The difference is night and day. The example in the video was on a single finished track. I was skeptical when I read the description but I think that's because of the marketing and not the design of the plugin. I like this plugin, it added foundation to my kicks, meat to my bass and clarity to my synths. Whats' missing is a wet knob as the mojo knob is more of a drive/distortion knob. It also could make use of some auto gain staging as it increases gain. I completely understand that unitedplugins intend to charge money for this, its just 49€ is a bit steep, 29€ is more realistic, it's a good sounding and very simple swiss knife.

This is supposed to be used like a preamp that gives subtle coloration to all of your tracks/channels. It's supposed to give more of a console emulation by instantiating the plugin on each track. It's random algorithm, they claim, gives a slightly different sound on each instance, recreating the slight differences between the different preamps of a console. I have it. I don't know if it's beneficial or not yet, but it's a novel idea. I bet Chris Lord Alge didn't consider slightly different components for each channel of his console emulation plugin.
@jeremybarbarek9665

I think this plugin sounds better when track fader is turned down, drive more signal into the filter with the input knob and filter knob full... it adds color to the audio... but a lot of other plugins sounds exactly like this one which don’t require you to try to simulate output gain. (If you use audio that is already loud and mastered you can hardly hear what this plugin is doing). Another trick is take your interface and turn down the input and now use FrontDaw as your input control in other words this is now your digital interface for your interface.... (I think this is what was actually intended) having a real output gain would just make the effects more noticeable in more situations.
@peterbrandt7911

Well, sorry to say that, but this review is some sort of anti-snakeoil, which is also skakeoil, or? It is meant to be to used subtle on many tracks at the same time, not as a mastering plugin. You also spent way too much time on the GUI. I would also very much prefer a real VU meter and the missing gain compensation is a bummer as well, but whether you or me "like" the graphics is really not important. They kept the GUI fairly small and besides the missing VU there's everything you need and it is extremely simple to use. You can bypass it via right click and disable. I would also prefer to be able to enable oversampling, I understand, that they wanted to keep the CPU footprint low, but please let the user decide. I added it for fun to some busses and some VSTi. It sounded nice. Due to the fact, that it lacks some functions I'd prefer other saturation plugins on my main vocals and the 2-bus, but it's not bad at all.

I downloaded this plugin when it was free at release. Tried it a couple of times, but I always gravitate towards other (including built-in to Logic) saturators. There are better ways to spend 50$ IMHO. I wasn't aware of that low frequencies being generated. Isn't that an attempt to emulate "50/60hz hum" from the mains, just like Waves does? Yep, I agree, a post gain knob would be useful, but alas, it is not the only Plugin missing one of those... I couldn't hear any difference between the 3 different modes. I tried it in various amounts of drive, but not hi g seemed to change. Perhaps my ears are not subtle enough... I'm not sure I fully understand what the mojo dial does... I never comment on anything, but I needed to say this. I think this 'review' is quite unfair because the concept of the plugin has unfortunately been misunderstood and the experience is not 'real world'. This is an INPUT saturation plugin, not to be applied to a completed mix. It is to be used on each (what I call 'input') track as the (potentially) first insert plugin to give you an 'analog' feel. *** SIDE NOTE *** The latest version not only 'emulates' British/USA/German console sounds, but also Magnetic (read tape) and Clipper (like old school Tascam 414 4-track trim sound). (BTW These 2 new modes are pretty cool and very usable as... remember... 'input' starting points. (Starting being underlined). It is not a plugin to finalise your sound, it's a starting point... a FRONTDAW (read FRONT DOOR)! They at no point do they try to suggest any of their emulations are accurate to specific real analog devices, but rather give you a pretty damn good representation of the 'character' of those consoles/desks of the day. I personally use it religiously on 90-95% of all my incomming tracks on a mix. I, unfortunately, do not have access to crazy analog hardware, so to me it's an impresive substitue. You need good ears but each variation has a huge affect on the sound of the instrument/voice you apply it to. TBH sometimes just load it and leave it. For anyone who cares... The [MOJO] knob. I've been convinced that the 'scratches' on the ui are indicating roughly where to get it. In fact I'm pretty sure all the scrathes all over the UI are little 'reminders' for common settings. The new UI (v3) has reinforced this for me as i keep landing on scratches when quicky mixing large number of tracks. And remember they have now also added INPUT/OUTPUT meters, Autogain, Magnetic/Clipper modes. Regardless of this lack luster 'Snake Oil' review... It's actually a pretty f'n awesome plugin if you are looking for a quick way to give your recording a bit more E in the A!

I've been hunting for a plugin like this as the only alternative is FREEG and it is super buggy and often hogs cpu/freezes. Its nice to have a simply gain plugin that can do a touch of sweetening to help balance levels coming from a board in a streaming setup (where I can't adjust gain only for the stream). There are surprisingly few of these and I've seldom found a channel strip or other plugin I'm happy to put on each track without it getting confusing for other users or, previously, too heavy on CPU. Its niche but I'm hoping it works out. Thankfully a VU has been added, though its pretty basic. I think the 'kinda yellow' is actually a clipping indicator.

most daws and sound interfaces operate easily at 96K and if you lack cpu power, you can use for instance audio gridder. So preceding front daw, with a high cut, 4 order bessel linear phase, or such at 22KHz will remove almost completely all aliasing occuring from 43KHz folding back to 0Hz, since 22K to 43K gives a nice margin. This is what a did and the sound of frontdaw gained a lot from this ! it gave some balls to my midrange guitar high gain sound.

If you keep this up you might make some plugin manufacturers work a bit harder at UI and proper digital processing... god forbid! Hehe. I love your videos man. Funny though, this plugin didn’t actually sound that bad... maybe we’re being too hard on them...? Either way, good stuff as always.

Could you do a Snake Oil factor review for Harrison Mixbuss DAW? It is supposed to copy the gain stages and sound of a Harrison desk and is deliberately coloured. But is it good?

The stuff in the low-end that you're complaining about is so low in volume that it should be completely imperceptible. But that said, at the normal asking price this seems like a rather ill-considered plugin: Why does it have no output stage but does have a HPF? Why no oversampling in a saturation plugin? Still, I'm going to try it out considering it's a freebie at the moment. Perhaps I'll like what it's doing. Many plugins that do saturation don't do oversampling (Scheps Omni comes to mind), but if you keep the saturation subtle it shouldn't be a huge issue.

Not really convinced how useful Soundevice Digital's plugins are. Same goes for FireSonic's offerings. JMG Sound on the other hand remind me a lot of those Electro-Harmonix pedals from the 1970s. Each had a different effect that was totally unlike anything people had seen before. If you could "Snake Oil" some of JMG Sound's plugins, I would be grateful. They seem to be the hero of this story. For the most part, United Plugins seems like they are trying to duplicate Plugin Boutique's marketing, but JMG Sound seem like the only worthwhile contender here.

I snagged this only because it was free and I'm a sucker for free. However, will I use this plugin much? Probably not; not when I already have other plugins which emulate analog saturation and which actually have an output control.

I’m usually pretty relaxed about the way a plug-in looks, but the wear looks a bit ridiculous. Also, the “VARM” sounds very similar to Brainworx’ “TMT”.

Maybe they get the randomness from the current memory state of the computer.

I think it's just a seed number, generated and saved after adding new instance. Otherwise each recall would sound different.

@@overbe Yeah, I'd reckon it would work that way, it would be quite something if they relied on a true hardware random number generator that some security applications use.

Yeah, all that terrible stuff happening in the bass at MINUS 130 DECIBELS! Like anyone's going to be able to hear that. Notice that he scaled the display to -180 dB to show us all the stuff that nobody can hear. And BTW, there's a high pass filter on the plugin to get rid of any crap down there that he didn't bother to show us.

I'm getting it - Y not? Maybe it's good on something ;-) Well, got it going, it's pretty good on Logic's keyboard instruments it seems? As I understand this is a Melda built plugin (for Soundevice Digital) with a very easy interface for almost beginners, unlike the very good Melda plugins, which you have to know a lot to work them ;-) and I think it's quite old, which is maybe why it's free right now?
