Oooffff I went to business school, and quit at a dealership selling cars because the GM at my brand and the owner of all the dealerships focuses more on money than just getting people into cars. There was a lot of shady things that happened, like the time a guy really got us lowballed for a vehicle, and he was buying the final model year of that vehicle while trading in the first model year, which meant everything was pretty much the same except a few bells and whistles added each year. Anyway the guy wanted roof racks and instead of getting them from parts the GM told me to go buy a can of spray paint (he wanted black, his were chrome) and take the ones he already owned on his old suv and put it on the new one, but charged him cost and labor for putting in brand new ones. And that’s just one of the horrible things we did that I was just apart of I knew. I quit and ended up at a different dealership and it was like a breath of fresh air because it wasn’t a commission based pay or bonuses, it was a numbers game instead where the more cars you sold the more you’d get paid on top of your weekly pay instead of all commission where you had no base pay and any week you didn’t sell any cars you’d get minimum wage but it came out of your next pay when you sold a car, which meant you wanted to screw the customer instead of getting customers the best deals in order to sell more cars to increase your pay.

The graphics had better shaders and better lighting in general. From almost the same assets (free or very cheap.) That was released a month before Unity sh*t the bed. To be fair, all of the overhead design work in that 2 years was probably severely expedited when they switched to Unreal, helping cut overall porting time by magnitudes I would assume. And as a note, Unity as an engine was unaffected by the corporate decisions and monetization policies they changed, so that argument isn't that relevant to the events that happened here. Personally, I switched to Unreal as well, but ultimate switched back to Unity because I really disliked the workflow of Unreal, and that was even after building a scene 4x as fast as I would in Unity...

Okay, I'm a developer (probably why I'm getting this lovely content), but I'm not a game developer, so I'm not at all familiar with the Unity drama. What happened?!

Unity invented a new "run-time fee" that charge dev every time their games got installed regardless of whether it's the same device or a pirated version or earlier on web game (which every time you refresh the page counts as a fresh install for the game). And then they secretly changed the EULA to make the fee affects not only future game but also games that are already released and then deleted the older version of EULA. After a few weeks of outrages from the devs and publish companies they have to walk back and then fire the scummy CEO John Riccitiello but the damage is done. And because of that, Godot has a huge buff and sponsors.

@animeking1357 Technically it is possible but they don't care and just count it as 1 user anyway and that's the point

The fact that Unity's now former CEO used to be an executive at Electronic Arts, kinda adds up now. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the one who also greenlight the idea of DLCs and obsessive micro-transactions

One game i’m following has been delayed just recently because they are switching away from Unity (they took a while to finally say it after a period of silence)… But they are taking this time to absolutely polish the shit out of it and add a number of stuff that wasn’t going to originally be in the game. So thanks Unity, I guess.

Yeah. I could tell where it was going about 5 years ago, I switched to Unreal because from a financial perspective it was a no brainer and I was so new to Unity it didn't really matter

The whole point of the Unity debacle was to salt the fields for the next CEO coming in. That is what the C-Suite sold most of their shares in Unity a week BEFORE they tanked it.
