Pity one of these teams has to leave. They are both quite good. I was pulling for UCL as I remember Walker was amazing in the 1st round. She was quite good again in this round. I really thought she had the Algonquin Hotel in the end. Had she, UCL would have won. Then again, her team really struggled with the bonus questions while Edinburgh used them well & answered fast enough to enable them enough time to catch up. Right team won in the end but I'll be said to never see Walker again. Quite a brain on her.

Odd observations aside: Hiding spoilers here, gimme a sec... Glad UCL went out. Didn't like the way they kept dragging out time on bonus question. Edinburgh's very late comeback was thrilling, though, so a great match to watch. Late turnarounds and all. The right winner in the end.

I want to like the Edinburgh team but am not a big fan of the all-male teams. The last few years Edinburgh teams have done quite well -aren't they quite active on the UK student quiz scene? It shows, they clearly know how to 'use' the match and were right on top of the quizzing classics that were presented last night. Will they manage to reach the final though? Hopefully not as we need some girls on there! I'm mildly amused that both the Scottish teams still in are more Oxbridge than most of the actual Oxbridge colleges this year, I'm sure i read somewhere FitzJames is ex-Cambridge?

The consonant 'r' is, in linguistic terms, an alveolar approximant (some would say fricative), pronounced with the tongue tip nearing the front of the palate (close to the upper teeth) to create a narrow air space. This happens inside the mouth (obviously) and the lips are parted. The consonant 'v' is a labiodental fricative, realized with the lower lip (almost) touching the upper teeth to create a narrowed air space. This happens in front of the mouth and is visible. It is this sound that Johnstone produces (you can hear and see it) , thus pronouncing a 'v' (distinctively different from 'r') and referring to the 20th century instrument 'clavinet'.
