I find this interesting at it's definitely a depiction of college life, not necessarily regular uni life, if that makes sense! A someone who did 3 years at college at UQ it was very much out of the ordinary and not something most uni students in Australia do at all. There's more than 50,000 students at UQ and only 3,000 (absolute maximum) in colleges. Most people stay at home/live in sharehouses/apartments. College is super expensive and not built in to uni fees/loans so it's definitely a privilege to be able to stay at one, as opposed to what I understand of British and American unis.

With grading, it can get confusing here in Australia because the grading varies from university to university. For example a GPA of 7 or High Distinction (not every uni uses GPA) in can be 80+ or 85+ depending on the university. At some unis you can pass with 50%, but at others, you need 60% (eg. Griffith 50% = pass, UNSW 60% = pass - or at least that was the case when I studied at each). We're definitely a lot more casual here when it comes to things like dress codes (and perhaps the language we use when delivering lectures, I imagine). There's more than two universities here in Brisbane. The big 3 are UQ, QUT and Griffith. But we also have ACU and Charles Sturt for a start, not sure what others there are, although the 3 big ones are the only ones with large campuses. Education is (was) one of our largest industries here in Australia, so that's probably why there's so many more international students. But also, no offence to the UK, but I think with our weather and uniqueness, it may have a different appeal. It was great to hear your comparison, thanks for sharing!

I can't help but think that UK lecturers/professors care more about research and publication (for ranking purpose), and less about students learning.

I did my degree in the UK but i didn't like it at all. I find the lectures were usually of no use, all I needed was the notes that they left on the desk. Not much time given to tutorial or support. Students were on their own, it was either swim or sink situation. If i had a choice again, I would avoid UK at all cost. Many of my friends went to United States. They greatly enjoyed their university time.

That's a shame. I quite liked university in Sheffield, UK, but we did have a couple of older lecturers that were pretty unenthusiastic.

This is a really informative video. Can I just ask, as an exchange student, did you ever consider remaining in Australia to finish your degree rather than returning to your UK uni? Were you aware of any students who did this? Thank you!
@dreamingofdownunder

Hi Debbie, I wouldn't have been able to do that. We were only allowed to do an exchange year from Sheffield if we spent our final year in the UK. Most students went abroad in their 2nd year then returned to do their final year, but I actually had to do a masters as I did my third year abroad and had to do a final year back in the UK!

Hi, I'm not sure which country is best for that specific subject, but you'll have a great time if you move over to Australia, I'm sure. Maybe you could do an exchange year like I did and experience both countries?

Ppl usually say more depth in a UK degree vs more breath in a US degree. Is a Aus degree more depth or more breath? If depth, would you say an AUS degree is at the same or higher level than an UK one?
@dreamingofdownunder

I studied fewer subjects in Australia but had more lectures on each subject per week, so we definitely went more in depth in Australia on each module I took compared to the UK. The UK had more breadth, which I found a lot harder to balance as I had to cover more subjects and often had more homework due in per week. That may just be for my particular course though. I would say a degree in Australia and the UK are the same level though, as they were the same difficulty. It was much easier to get higher grades in exams in Australia, in terms of the actual percentage you got. But I would say the top band in Australia (85% and above) is equivalent to getting the top band in the UK (a 1st, or 70% and above). Hope that makes sense!

It's when you have to hand in a piece of work and your marks for it count towards your final grade. So, your grade could be made up of 75% exams and 25% coursework, for example.

Can you go to university with a work holiday visa ? Or do you need a permanent visa to go to uni
@dreamingofdownunder

You need a student visa to go to university here. Take a look at this page on the government website. immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-listing/student-500

If you hold a UK passport, you can apply for 3 years working holiday visa in Australia. But for study, it would be better to get student visa and leave the working holiday visa for future.

What's the difference in wages between both countries
@dreamingofdownunder
2 жыл бұрын
Minimum wage in Australia is $21.38 per hour. The UK equivalent in dollars is between $12 and $16.50 depending on your age. Generally wages are higher in Australia, but the cost of living is quite high too. I would avoid Sydney or London if you don't want to pay too much for rent, as they are both expensive.

Since I was an exchange student and not doing my whole degree in Australia, I just paid my normal fees to my UK university for my year abroad. It was a long time ago though so fees will have gone up since then! Have a look at this article for a fee comparison. www.timeshighereducation.com/student/advice/choosing-university-uk-versus-australia
