nice work, I'm a beginner cigar smoker and I'll be making some cigar ashtrays soon with my mentor who happens to be a wood turner, this video was very inspiring, to answer your question regarding the finish on your project maybe oddies oil would work since is a food grade finish, thanks again for the video

I still prefer to go finish-less. Toxicity is only part of it. I don't want the taste getting into my cigar either. Thanks for the kind comment and thanks for watching!

These look great!! I have made a few and sold them at craft/art fair. I make some of them bigger 7-6.5-8" finished round outer dimension. for the larger ones I use round slate coasters I get off amazon. I also add a label on the bottom that states "CAUTION - do not leave hot ash or lit cigars unattended. Clean out ashtray after each use. Artist/seller not responsible for user misuse or negligence!" I figure if hair dryer manufacturers have to include a "do not use in the bathtub" in their instructions for idiots to cover their butts legally then I should do the same! :-)

Thanks! I do intend to make them in several sizes. This just happened to be some spare wood I had given to me. I do think I am going to stick with the same snuff plate.

Nice job man. Your video piss me off though. I had two blanks ready to do cigar astrays while waiting for Amazon to deliver some inserts I had bought, then you beat me to it 😊. The ones I did are very different though. I do enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work 🤙

Thanks for watching! I had the inserts for about 18 months. I was given those chunks of wood so the time was right!

Very nice Mike. I’ve resisted turning these so far. The addition of the metal disk does help it make more sense to me though. I personally think they need some kind of finish. Maybe just abrasive paste and wax, but something to pop the beauty of the wood. Great job.

Thank you Doug! An occasional Stogie is a vise of mine. I may try to add some wax on one of the next ones. My experience with cigars is, if you were to leave one lit on a slab of wood, it would still go out. Especially if they were properly stored in a humidor. Although I do think the snuff plate is a good idea regardless! Thanks again my friend!

You shouldnt stub out a cigar, just let it rest for 2 mins and it should put itself out. But the idea of the bottom plate is a great addition for those that do stub out cigars or if people also smoke cigarettes.

I never stubbed mine out. It is also good for the people who thought the cigar would catch the wood on fire. I have had those too. Thanks for watching!

Thank you! They were about 4"x4", but don't be a slave to a particular size! You can use just about anything.

Thanks! I got them from Amazon. I looked for the largest steel disc I could find.
