Here's some tips I've gathered over the years: 1. Wash your used flower pots with soap. You don't want to contaminate new soil. 2. Place 1-3 plants per one flower pot. Basil needs a lot of space to grow. 3. Cut off the top of the stems just below a pair of growing leaves so it can branch out. 4. Allow the basil plant to grow and branch out before harvesting. 5. DO NOT harvest by taking off individual leaves (it damages the plant). Rather, cut off a few bigger long stems with lots of leaves. That way the basil keeps growing infinitely. 6. If you see a flower forming, cut that shit off. 7. Basil needs a lot of water. Once it becomes dry, the leaves will be soft and droopy so don't forget to check if the soil is dry. On hot days, I need to water it almost every single day. 8. If you have tiny flies around your plant, those are most likely to be mold gnats. They lay eggs on the surface of your plant because it's moist. Either, let the soil completely dry and water your plants by soaking them. Or just buy nematodes against mold gnats (It's cheap and will take care of the problem fast). 9. If you have any leaves that fell off on the surface of the soil, remove them because it will lead to mold.

controversial take here as a gardening professional myself: it's not the main point to overcrowd the pots in order to sell you a new plant every week. These pots are not meant to be plants grown at home, it's simply the packaging of your basil to be used for cooking, because if they would harvest the leaves or stems from a plant grown on a farm, they wilt too quickly to be sold fresh in a store.

It might help to know that supermarket basil only has the roots because otherwise it’ll wilt and die too quickly on display; this is also why it tends to be displayed on ambient shelving like most of the fruits rather than in the cooler area with the rest of the fresh herbs, because the refrigeration will kill the roots.

Solefluction! May have mis-spelled, but it is a word that often refers to roots getting washed out leading to trees falling and stuff, when there's flooding, especially on a hillside. I think. Anyway it can be applied here. Easier to seperate a cluster of plants if you submerge them in a bucket or bin. They loosen right up so you dont have to tear them apart.

I tried this with several basil plants from different stores, some organic, some normal, I even bought seeds for different basil types. yes they grow ok when planted in single pots but it takes long until you get decent yield. my plants always died before I could harvest a lot, either from lice or other reasons like putting them outside and they got exposed to the wrong weather. I'm tired of trying, I just buy pots now from the supermarket and save myself the hassle. I know of people who don't care about their basil and it just grows outside like weeds - maybe the secret is to get the right basil type.

I often just loosened the roots and planted them in a much bigger pot, often with another basil, I just make sure to remove dying stems completely and to give the plants at least 4-5x as much soil as their original size. Also they love water as long as you don't drown them. The right trimming is basically always doing the heavy lifting. But yeah I recommend for a tighter budget (in the city where I'm at you need to buy soil and it's not cheap) you don't really need to separate it just loosened the roots a lot, remove dying stems, and give it some space to grow Also I prefer most of my herbs to be a lot smaller but bushier I feel they're healthier that way

You don't need to go to a horticulturist (not "horticulturist" which is not a word). There are over 200 cultivars of basil. All basil is easy to make cuttings from. As someone who works at a plant nursery. We DO NOT overcrowd our herbs because we want it to die so you need to buy more. If we sold the pot of herbs with the proper amount of seeds everyone would complain and say that there isn't enough. We do what is asked. After getting complaints of being "cheap" with the seeds, nurseries started adding more seeds and now we have no complaints. But we do know that the plant will not survive if it's left in its initial pot, and that is no longer our problem, since doing it the right way would cause people to complain. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I grow my herbs from seed. They grow super fast, seeds are cheap and the newly grown persil basil etc tastes way better IMO when it's tiny then when it's older, thicker and busier. But I guess it depends on what you want to do with it. I use the raw, fresh leaves over stew, sauce etc or just eat them as is. If you want to dry and grind them the older, bigger leaves are probably better. The store bought herbs here are most of the time moldy and I bought *so* many plants with critters in them that destroyed some other plants. But the soil itself carries so much stuff. I'm mostly to lazy to bake the soil though 😩

I agree, I wouldn't get my basil to get this big again. Smaller plants are just generally easier to maintain. The one in the video just kind of got out of hand because my kitchen gets super warm during the summer and basil grows so fast in warm temperatures. I never had problems with mold, however. But it is true that they can carry a lot of nasty stuff. I just don't have the patience to wait for it to grow from seed 😂
