Line and Color Quick Start Guide: www.thedrawing...
In this video I do an extended session going over thumbnailing and planning your images. In this case we focus on how you can use thumbnails to help push your ideas and learn the fundamentals of illustration while creating work you enjoy.
The first section includes examples of how thumbnailing is used by successful artists.
I also share how I use it both in my everyday sketching routines and in my professional comicbook work.
In the second section I demo the thumbnailing process and different ways you can approach it.
And in the final section I demo how to take a thumbnail and turn it into a more detailed drawing.
This is not about creating highly polished images. But rather how to plan even your simplest sketches and drawing sessions. To give them more visual interest and illustrative quality.
The key here is to explore different ideas with your thumbnail sketches and use the separation of idea and execution to help you try different ideas quickly and expand your understanding of illustration theory.
The more you can iterate and actually plan your images the more you can start to apply the many abstract ideas behind what makes a good picture.
On if the books I talk about in the video is Creative Illustration by Andrew Loomis.
