@nyxnightingale That's so true, I find it hard to even watch a movie, but I didn't notice the time length on it. They are really good! I don't like fusion as much as I like belly dance, still this this kills the monotony. If you watch too long, some of these dancers just look like they are jiggling and wiggling with no point. This is a nice group, if ever I get a chance I'll try to see them if they travel to Tennessee.

That's the beauty of Tribal Improv in my opinion- you have a tremendous amount of freedom to create. Some combos do tend to go well together, or to go well with certain songs. None of the combos we performed last year were in the same order as this year, you may have noticed, and three of the combos we performed this year were brand new so could not have been repeated. ; ) Thank you Amy for being so creative and birthing this unique style of dance so the rest of us can enjoy it!

I totally agree that it is a sensitive topic, and Ms Masinah has every right to feel strongly about it. I would never assume to know how that song makes her feel. In turn, she does not have is the right to assume we are cuturally insensitive and insult us. I am personally offended. I gues we're even. Mission accomplished MsMasinah.

Well my better judgment says to avoid all posts on my part. but....I feel like this discussion warrants some disclosed motivation for me. I don't have the edited version of the song. I rarely buy radio play albums. I bought the Kafani album before the Nascar inspiration. The song "Fast like a Nacar" inspired this set. the rest of the songs were put in after. I just pushed play on the song and used it as it was. no disrespect intended towards anyone, any group or anything. to be cont....

unmatagirl no one is trying to censor unmata whatsoever, what they do on stage is what they do on stage. I have seen the gals perform at other places and never heard them dance to a song that use the "N" word. I was taken back by it myself when i heard it. I feel for the ladies because not all people would let that slide , I hope that they never run into that problem when the audience is not to receptive of their choice of unedited music.

MsMasinah has the right to her opinion whether we see eye to eye w/ her or not. Emotions may be blurring the issue. She, if I understand correctly, was put-off by UNMATA using an unedited song containing the "n" word. If she is of African-American descent (which is the impression here), then she has every right to be concerned about the public use of the word. The irony to those of us who know Amy is that she's also a minority and is not out to seek anyone's approval. She is a dancer.

I understand that she is a dancer and that she is not out to seek anyone's approval. My first statement was that I was taken back by the use of the unedited music,just as i would be if any group got up there and did the same thing. Who am I ? They need no approval from me or anyone else for that matter. I voiced my opinion about the use of the song and yes i am a African American woman who was taught that if we don't stand for something we will fall for anything.

So, the argument is really moot. -Bottom line here, is that in this complex society, it's simply impossible to see eye-to-eye. We don't all like the same flavor of ice cream. We don't all practice the same ethics. Some are more sensitive than others when it comes to language and that really should be respected. It's cool, MsMasinah, that you wish Amy/UNMATA hadn't used the unedited version. But... she did. And certainly, was merely exercising her right to, as the composer exercised his.
@DahliaDance

My comment was just an attempt at saying, art (sp. UNMATA/Amy Sigil) has no boundaries. The offense taken by some people by the performance, apparently, so far, has to do w/ the music. My "ponder" comment was a generic one about the infinite quality of humanity that drives to push ever-changing boundaries. The use of the "n" word, or ANY "foul" word, for that matter, and it's power to offend is absolutely and unarguably culturally relative - meaning - truth lies in the mind of the beholder.

It's hard to swallow, but the fact is: EVERY SINGLE point of view is RELATIVE truth -including yours, MsMasinah. You are intimately close to the sensitive issues surrounding the "n" word. But by golly, if the music is out there for EVERYONE to buy, then WE will enjoy it whether we are culturally sensitive to your p.o.v. or not. It's true, it can be offensive. But it's not MEANT to be. Today I sat at a traffic light next to a car blaring unedited rap music. Driver? -White girl. The irony!!!

I know plenty of white girls that listen to unedited rap music, what is ironic about that? i never said that white girls couldn't listen to unedited rap music, cause hell i listen to unedited rap music.I just wouldn't get on a stage and dance to an unedited version of a song out of respect for my audience. Both of my bellydance teachers were both white women and they both made sure that we never danced to anything that was inappropriate, cause you never know who is in the audience.

Ok let me ask you all a fair question, If a predominantly all black group went to Tribe Fest and dance to a song that used derogatory names towards white people and then flipped people off during the performance to a predominately white audience would you all be so accepting of that? Unmata is very talented and good at what they do. Using an edited version of that song wouldnt have taken away from thier talent or the attitude they were tryin to portray in the dance simply put!

I honestly don't think that you DahliaDance are getting what she is saying? She said she has no problem and enjoyed there performance,but the unedited use of the "N" word was inappropriate. And you say at what point does a human have to ask permission to use anothers language,music,or style? Why ask that when she didnt say anything about them using black music? And exactly what mission was to be accomplished by it?
@MsMasinah
15 жыл бұрын
His music is already edited how do you think artist go mainstream? by producing radio edits. If they didn't artist would get no radio play & would remain underground. So actually record companies do this for you! & if i didn't want to discuss why would i be discussing here and I personally am not trying to escape nothing that i dont understand Im trying to get an understanding now the fact that you say its sad It would be sad if i wasn't trying to get an understanding!
@MsMasinah
15 жыл бұрын
There is not a problem with them dancing to the song what she is saying that they should have edited out the "N" word and the cussing thats all! I myself am i sista and yes i dance to all types of music,but i make sure that the songs that i dance to are edited. Cause yeah rap music has some of the worst lyrics,but you can always find the edited version or the radio edit that takes out the offenses words, that is the point she is making,not that only black people can dance to it.

UNMATA sees no color. They blur lines between "this" and "that." They make us examine our own opinions of dance and creativity. These kinds of things are what make art "Art." We don't have to like it. But if it makes us feel something, then maybe a mission has been accomplished. (Something to ponder: At what point does a human being have permission to use "someone else's" language? Or music? Or style? - Must they be a certain color? Or born into "the community?" Or can one merely "like" it?" ;)
