Random question: my ensemble is looking to perform a few larger wind band works for our September concert (hopefully in Richardson) and we'll be needed a Bass Sax player. Would you be at all interested? Tony might be in too.

13:16 The middle D being finicky is a quirk on pretty much every bass saxophone due to the distance between the low C tone hole where the note comes out, and the nearest speaker vent.

Very useful info in your video. I’ve had a Levante bass sax for over a year and you answered many questions I had. I’m using a Selmer C ** mouthpiece with Vandoren No 2 reeds. The only problem the sax has so far is me: need an extra pair of lungs and 40 years less of age! Enjoy your bass sax an please give us some follow up on it.

If you find an old bass sax / bari mouthpiece like a woodwind one that has a big chamber, they work well on these. The vandoren bass one, I've not had any decent luck with them, probably because I don't have their ligature. The Vandoren bass reeds have the best sound all over for bass sax, the rico ones that are for bass are easier to play but have a more raspy harsh sound. The legere bass reed works if you don't have time to setup a vandoren to make it right and you want a better sound than the rico. Bari sax reeds work, like rico 2 can in a pinch. Also contra bass clarinet reeds work to most degree and are a lot easier to find. A bass clarinet ligature on a bigger mouthpiece works good from rovner. If you play the middle D using the D spatula key, it will make it come out like it should. This was a known issue even on older horns. Only writeup I can find that has more info than beginner sax info for the bass is this: www.modernbarisax.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/MM-Complete-1929-Bass-Sax-series-by-Adrian-Rollini.pdf That has a great writeup from Adrian Rollini during the 20's jazz time frame. Marcus also makes good bass sax reeds.

I've marched with my Chinese SA80II copy bass sax (from the same factory as this one) as I didn't want my Yamaha 62 bari coming to any harm. The band instructor wanted more punch or attack to the bass end of the band as the tuba player was too woolly sounding. I used a JazzLab harness instead of a sling. It's like having a dead weight and felt like I had to follow where it wanted to go.

Happy birthday! Excellent looking horn there... I am a just graduated high school sax player, and I played some bass sax in sax choirs and even finagled my way into my school's lower bands and doubled tuba on bass. In what capacity do you expect to play bass sax? Will that sort of sax be a worthy buy?

Beautiful instrument! Did you wind up having to get it repadded and the key action reset? No criticism just interested. On many of the sax forums and in my local shop I've been told that is a possibility with many of the less expensive saxes, in general. I'm interested in getting one but I too am not in the market for a Selmer or a rare over priced antique.

It is true that many bari mouthpieces are unsuitable, but that is usually because the facing is not long enough. For example Ron Caravan makes a bass sax mouthpiece that is simply a refacing of his bari sax mouthpiece. caravanmouthpieces.com/mp/bass-sax-sf.html. Paul Coats does the same thing with older Conn and Runyon bari mouthpieces. In other words, most bari sax mouthpieces CAN work very well, they usually just need to be refaced. Also, if you use a refaced bari piece you have a MUCH larger and cheaper selection of reeds.

I've just noticed this video. I was in a similar position to the author seven years ago, buying a Chinese bass sax (Buscher/Conn) style. On checking various websites for tips on learning the instrument, which was and is beautiful, I hit a barrage of posters telling me to immediately throw the 'rubbish' mouthpiece in the bin and get a decent one. So I did that, and now have a collection of Yamaha, Otto Link and Rico mothpieces, which has cost me many hundreds of pounds and that don't work on the horn! So, guess what?! I find that the one that came with the horn works best of all, with a suitable reed! Message: there's a whole mouthpiece and ligature industry out there desperate to sell their expensive products to players of new saxophones! I hope that dallassax did not fall for this crap too. He played the sax out of the box on a mouthpiece, reed and ligature provided by Levante. This company is not stupid. They provided something that to my hearing, worked well with trheir sax! Let's assume they know what they're doing with these parts of the sax, the same as they obviously know what they're doing with the rest of the instrument. Save yourself a fortune!

@kolbybui5317

Brent Breault that would be awesome. the reason that only bari’s come with a low A is because it’s a concert low C. a low A on bass is a concert G, which is apparently not used as much?
@brentbreault7606

Kolby Bui It’d be totally sick if it had a low A. I think a concert G is very useful, more useful than an A flat. Especially with how often we play in the key of B flat.
