1:15AM the phone rings at mable jack's home, Mabel is the mother of Ronald, and Ronald is the person whose family vanished in thin air, phone rings, mable picks it up it was her 26 year old son, Ronald, he say he and his wife Doreen got a job, he was excited because as per the interview of witnesses in this story he was in dire need of a job at that moment.
But Ronald finishes the call in a really cold and disturbing style, he saysMom "if I don’t comeback, come looking for me.
Isnt this a cold way of saying bye over the phone especially to your mother. But at that moment, Mabel didn’t noticed this. Later she discussed this conversation with the media and police. But Imagine these were the last words she would ever hear from her fully young son. This is hearbreaking.
Years passed but this incident has more questions than answers, Like who was the unknown man who offered job to Ronald and his wife? Why did he say come looking for me? Why did the media not report more heavily on the disapperace of entire family?
Lets begin.
Ronald jack, he was born on 29th of march 1963 and his wife Doreen on 24th of april 1963, both grew up in one of the most beautiful places on earth. British Columbia, But behind the glassy portryal of columibia, there lies a dark underbelly, and it is filled with isolated rural roads, lonely, disconnected towns and extreme poverty. And most of all highway 16, and 719KM between prince rupert to prince george. No phone service, large stretches, it is in a word Isolated.
Little is know about Ronald, large family, six brothers. Father was a keen hunter. Ronald himself, friendly outgoing. Two words a nice guy. But Doreens past was a bit hard. He upbringing marked by violence, poverty and sexual abuse at the hands of her father. And that was something which she endured alongside her two sisters. Marlene and Lorene. Marlene goes by Maria. But the couple as reported was not fully but they were living life moderately.
But at some point not clear when exactly, the cracks would begin to show. At least according to doreen;s sister Maria, Ronnie has became more explosive and maria had both seen him attack doreen on more than one occasion. I don’t know if I should be saying these things. Lets jump back to the story.
The Night of the disappearance:
It was Tuesday August 1st 1989, in prince George, british columbia. Ronnie was unemployed at that time. On that night he decided to go for a few drinks at a local pub called First litre. The pub was in between jack's home and highway 16.
Its important to note that first litre was a very local dive bar, a seedy bar in a seedy part of town. Ronnie was a regular there. They didn’t have a car and this pub was on walking distance from his home. So whenever he wanted drinks, lets go to first litre.
But that night, an unknown man comes along and he changes everything, No one know how he started converstaion with ronnie but he did that is for certain. He offered ronnie and doreen jobs for ten days and two week, possibly longer. At a logging camp. Which was like soemthing they both were looking for.
RCMPs offical press release on the case, the unknown man has been described as follows:
• P536
• Caucasian male
• 35 to 40 years old
• 183 cm to 198 cm (6` to 6`6`) tall
• 91 to 125 kg (200 to 275 lbs)
• Reddish-brown hair with a full beard
Wearing a ball cap, red checkered work shirt, faded blue jeans, blue nylon jacket, and work boots with leather fringes over the toes.
But whatever those words were, she said ronnie was not nervous at all, but his conversation was quite brief. Now please be noted that the key witnesses on this case was their relatives, like Doreen's sister and her cousin.
Investigations:
After couple of days of no contact, Mabel reported the family missing on eith Thursday 25th or Friday 26th of august, 23 or 24 days after jack family had left their home.
When police started the investigation and visisted their home, their furniture and other clothes were there like they were intended to come back. And it is unclear whether mabel was aware of the unknown man at the moment or not. But a thing which arises is that no media channel ever tried to she lights on this. Only one paper picked up the story, the price george citizen on Wednesday 30th august.
Information given to the paper by the police were incorrect: details like
Burns lake family missing
They were living their for just a year.
Their reports said that ronnie spoke with his father and not mother.
And the only statement and most horrific statement of this tragedy was "it was possible that ronnie found futher employment and hasn’t bothered to call home.
