Episode #53 Another great video. Love your bio of and sample illustrations by Loomis. His artwork is really well done. With Loomis's working in Chicago, I wish that my uncle was still alive to ask him if he knew Loomis. My uncle Bud, George Crosby (originally Necrosby) was a commercial artist in Chicago (Downers Grove) but sadly died in his sixties similar to Loomis though about 10 years later. I might add that as a B-17 radio operator stationed in East Anglia, my Uncle Bud helped defend your homeland in WW2. Thanks for another great episode. JJS

Thank you again for this fantastic series, all young people hoping to be illustrators need to be watching these, the stunning non digital images show us things we don't see much any more, the tone and textures alone are a great reference. Helo Pete. Firstly thank you so much for these quality insights. Partner and I have just discovered your channel and it's keeping us entertained and informed and inspired in these weird times. We are now curious about the processes involved in transferring art works into print. The likes of William Heath Robinson - around the 1900s. What techniques/materials?processes would have been used? Any chance of a video explaining this? A cheeky ask I know :-) Jac Seery Howard.

Hello and thanks for watching and sticking with the channel. His black and white images were created with pen ( specifically a 'scratch' or 'dip' pen) and indian ink over his pencil drawing. Solid black areas filled with brush. And his colour work was created the same way and then had transparent washes of watercolour applied on top. All the images were created at least 50% bigger than the size they were printed and they were reproduced by the offset lithographic process just as images are now. This had been available for monochrome printing since about 1885 but colour offset lithography didn't arrive until about the turn of the century and that's when Robinson started to work in colour. There had been other earlier colour methods but they weren't as good. There's really no need for me to make a video about this as there's already plenty on youtube. Just search for 'offset litho'.

A very refreshing aspect of this authoritative sequence of videos is that the subjects are presented free of the flashy egotism so pervasive on KZitem. The thorough knowledge and enthusiasm of Pete Beard is throughout dedicated to the subjects and not himself. I recall many of these books so well, since my grandfather had a lending library for secondhand books in a tiny village and I share much of this enthusiasm. Sadly the books disappeared when I left home to study. I would love to revisit them.

If I can address your earliest comment first it's my intention (bit by bit) to re-upload most if not all the videos in the highest definition, and Heath Robinson will be among them. I'm struggling to keep up as there are just so damn many illustrators to cover and I've been improvising as I go along. And other than that I'm delighted that you consider me to not be another of youtube's countless raving egomaniacs. It may sound corny but it reaky is about the illstrators - not yours truly.
