I know you said not to, but I'm doing it anyway. Hidden Palace was always meant to use the 2P Mystic Cave theme. The September 14th prototype has a version of Hidden Palace Zone in the midst of being cut from the game but still uses the Mystic Cave 2P theme. The new song was only assigned to the level slot *after* it had already been cut from the game, for unknown reasons. The Demo version of the track before it was converted to work on the Genesis also has a proper ending, implying it was made for a cutscene and not as a level theme.

Yeah,the August prototype debunks the placeholder theory and the September prototype kinda confirms that the MCZ2P was the actual theme since HPZ was not accesible anymore but if you try to load it you’ll get a purple screen that still plays the MCZ2P theme. Track 10 playing in the final version was either a remnant of the cutscene idea or it was probably dumped in HPZ since it was a garbled inaccesible mess.

after going through the Sonic Superstars section, I'd like to comment as a musician that YM2612 isn't any sort of plugin, but rather that's the name of the chip the Sega Genesis uses for its sound. and as someone who's played around with digital recreations of this chip I have a feeling that isn't the only thing that's changed in the final version of the track, though I'm not denying that it might've been used in the OST I'd also like to add another notable difference between the Sonic Crackers and Knuckles' Chaotix OST is that the Crackers music seems to reuse the drum samples from other Sonic games of the time, while Chaotix ended up using its own set of drum samples (hence why some people prefer how the drums sound in Crackers)

Listening to the section on Sonic Superstars rn and going "what on earth is bro on about?!?!" As @/terionic already correctly pointed out in the comment section, YM2612 is not a VST plugin, but the sound chip that the original SEGA Genesis used to produce sound. Another thing, Jun Senoue did not make the final version of Cyber Station Zone. That was another musician named TORIENA. Senoue also does this with Tee Lopes for a good lot of the Sonic Superstars OST, namely the Title Screen, Bridge Station Zone Act 1, the Invincibility music, and the Super Sonic theme.

The "Super Sonic theme" from the proto is actually simply a song unused for the blue sphere results minigame. Proof of that is literally it being used as such in Sonic Origins. I was shaking my head seeing that most people don't even know the correct purpose of this track when you can simply do your math and put the unused songs according to their intended places, this song will eventually fit the "minigames/special stages related" category since all the others have already their places. Edit: Sorry if I sounded rude, I was just frustrated because people said for years this was intended for Super Sonic when that CLEARLY isn't the case.

A fun fact about sonic 3's music. The sonic & knuckles album released in 1994 has an extended version of lava reef that NOBODY talls about, it basically adds a proper end to the song after the bridge before loopong and I think it sou ds neat... And a bonus fact about sonic forces, red gate bridge (the song that plays for 3 seconds before fighting metal sonic) was an early demo track created for sonic forces to get a feel for how the games music was gonna sound. I find it interesting they put it in the game and on the games soundtrack, despite the fact it has no business being there. Maybe ohtani just really liked it.

It was switched to Track$10 in final to just give a unique tracks to 2p mode. It at all wasnt meant to be a complete zone theme, just listen to Demo version! Now live with this, go cry :p; 3) Also Sonic Remix album has "Technopower mix" that contain possible R2 (Dubious Depths) bad future mix; 4) 3D Blast has several unused tracks, as well 8-bit Sonic games. Otherwise, video is not bad 👍

Pretty good video, but I'd like to point out a few of the tracks you may have missed. - Sonic 1 MS/GG has a few more unused tracks and jingles, like "Dash! Jump! Spin! Attack!" and "Let's Have a Break". Sonic 2's 8-bit version has a few as well. - Sonic Chaos has some very early versions of tracks present in the final game, except for one which was later reused for Sunset Park Zone Act 3. - Sonic Spinball has several unused themes. The title, jingles, and game over theme were all originally based on Sonic 1's title theme. Very late into development, they learned that they didn't have the rights to use Sonic 1's music, so the tracks were completely remade last-minute. There's also an unused version of The Machine. - Sonic 3D Blast has an unused special stage jingle. Not just the one that was later used for Pleasure Castle, but another much shorter theme. - Sonic Adventure has an unused 1-up jingle, and another untitled unused jingle. The unused 1-up was remixed to be used in Generations, but was scrapped again. - There's another unused Shadow the Hedgehog song called "All Of Me". Not to be confused with the Crush40 song. This one was also by Sins Of A Divine Mother. - Sonic Mania had another unused track, which later became Lagoon City Zone Act 2, according to Tee Lopes. - Sonic Superstars has WAY more beta tracks and earlier versions than just Cyber Station Zone. Almost all of them are present within the game's files. As for completely unused songs, you missed Press Factory Act Fruit, which has a completely different beta version. - And lastly, these two might not fit as much. Sonic X-treme and Sonic Chronicles. Sonic X-treme has a MASSIVE conceptual soundtrack made by the director, Chris Senn. There weren't any tracks made for the final game, however. Sonic Chronicles had an original soundtrack which was almost completely lost due to copyright. As a result, they resorted to using fanmade MIDI's of older Sonic songs, which led to the final soundtrack that the game is so infamous for. The original, intended OST for the game is still mostly lost. I likely still missed a few, but that's most of them that I remember.

The 2 Player songs from Sonic 2 were very likely used for the other cut zones. For example, Emerald Hill 2 Player would have been the cut Tropical Plant level and originally Oil Ocean's theme would have been Casino Night 2 Player music before it was changed. The Oil Ocean theme was originally going to be used for the cut Sand Shower level. Also I'm pretty sure Sky Chase music would have been used for the cut Rock World level. Another channel called Collision Chaos Radio made a video about that, I highly recommend it

I found this video to be very thorough, however I wanted to add a few extra tracks and fun facts you may like to know about down here. 1:19 While Marble Zone was the only unused theme in Sonic 1 SMS, years later Yuzo Koshiro (the composer for the 8-bit version) released an “Early Collection Box” that had 5 more unused tracks from this game. kzitem.info/door/PL37TwLBv1l-RlmwMnmWhXwHj8-Ti2Z_4t&si=yfHohCsMy81xzyD5 1:29 I wanted to also mention that the 8-Bit version of Sonic 2 also had two unused tracks. The first was used in the Game Gear Auto Demo (which was basically just early gameplay footage) kzitem.info/news/bejne/06hnuJuuZpx2nKwsi=r320wOv6NZytizDu, which I believe to be an early version of Underground Zone. The second goes unused in the final game, which is possibly an earlier version of Crystal Egg Zone. kzitem.info/news/bejne/y3yvsaSBfXiCf4osi=cgCReMoaIdLFkkLm 3:40 There were actually three. The third was the Techno Power Mix found on that same album. kzitem.info/news/bejne/mG2d4J6oa19mh6gsi=VrNzUal-9yC4usrZ At around 3:19, you can hear D.A. Garden’s bassline. 4:48 Believe it or not, this IS a remix of “You Can Do Anything,” it’s just a different section of the song. kzitem.info/news/bejne/rq6l2HWAsXaVo6Asi=ZpAFX0Bn_sQN6QjI Check around 0:39 and you can hear a similar sounding melody. 6:15 Imo, it’s not that sh!tty when you listen to it the right way. I’d recommend this playlist, which I believe used a Roland SC-55 MIDI rather than the General MIDI or GOD FORBID the FM Synthesizer. kzitem.info/door/PLT1G6yIo2msGZHFdSv-BF1ysPGC-etdUJ&si=ZOBEfaDz1HXNKsrg 7:23 The final game’s Ice Cap has one of the longest loops, believe it or not. While the prototype’s themes are around a minute long, final Ice Cap’s Act 1 is around 1:23 and Act 2 is the longest music loop in the entire game, at a whopping 1:37. If it sounds shorter, I don’t blame you, but if you listen closely, you’ll notice the difference. 8:13 That’s partially because both Proto Carnival Night and Launch Base’s Act 2 themes were likely arranged by the same person, Masayuki Nagao. He was responsible for Hydrocity Act 2’s arrangement, which uses a lot of the same instruments. 8:35 Stranger in Moscow was actually a remix of Sonic 3’s Staff Credits, which was composed by Brad Buxer for Sonic 3 before being reworked by him and Jackson. Brad unfortunately never received credit for his work, which is a shame and should absolutely be remedied. 15:08 There was also an unused Credits theme that was completely different from “Guided Tour,” the one heard in the final game. kzitem.info/news/bejne/sWmdt2qlrWZnn3osi=nvpU3cHt7aASzXpq 15:56 There was another version that was arranged by TORIENA that was much more similar to Jun’s original version before she rearranged it for the final game. kzitem.info/news/bejne/pH2m0GpmbJtipo4si=TwTCQqyN12OnAA4P 16:55 While the Special Stage theme was changed, there were three others that were also scrapped. The first was a “Mini Game Clear” jingle, which was composed by Jun and surprisingly made its way onto the Spotify release of the OST. kzitem.info/news/bejne/w5-p1oOZZpihdmksi=uBZLrcdtTwVvM74Y The second and third weren’t as lucky. The first was a much more cheerful theme for Press Factory Act Fruit. kzitem.info/news/bejne/w6SKnKVor3OefnYsi=zo3VDDCgMGwyHynM The other one was a completely different Super Sonic theme that was originally composed by Jun before being rearranged by Tee Lopes. kzitem.info/news/bejne/lYp7mqiOpqmdlHosi=_Y8AUnn2Yzk-L79B Like I said, this was a really great and thorough video and I hope to see more content like this from you in the future. :)

For me the unused track in sonic 3 isn't a unused super theme, rather a unused result screen theme for 2 reasons, first looking at sonic 2 it also uses a different track for it's 2 player mode only heared there and since the final game uses the continue/ get blue spheres jinge, it wold make sense that at one point it had a unique theme for it and second, looking at the way the prior games used it's invincibility themes, it (mostly) allways had something to do with it's main theme like sonic 1 and in the case of super sonic, yeah you only had sonic 2 but in there the super theme also had something to do with it's main theme wich the unused theme has nothing to with the main theme. yeah you COULD argue that they wanted to try out something different and while yes i can see it, it makes no sense in the long run since even sonic 4 and mania did the sonic 2 approach and it took 28 years untill we actually got an actuall super theme for 3&k with origins. (And thats might be a big hot take but, it's a way better super theme than the unused track is even though the drums make no sense)

11:40 This wasn't the reason at all. Mike Szuter (the vocalist) explained that there was every intention to use Who I Am in the game, but Jun Senoue expressed desire to record a brand new track with the band together, which would eventually become All Hail Shadow.
@shaulov10

Nah my explanation is more funny so it’s true
@MrNoobNub
Ай бұрын
I dont mean to "erm actually" you, but that is in fact not the reason Who I Am was cut. Mile Szuter himself commented on a non-album upload of the song explaining the true reason. The verbatim comment reads "Actually...... I had originally played all the solos on the album including this one. Just weeks later CJ left the band and we got a new guitar player. I thought it would be cool to let him re-record the solos since the album hadn't been released yet, figuring he'd be more invested in it etc. I haven't heard this solo since I recorded it, I don't have any of the original versions. It is pretty badass. Wish I had the others! As far as the origin of the song: A friend of mine named Jun who worked for Sega contacted me about creating a song for the Shadow The Hedgehog game. I of course said yes and immediately wrote this song. He traveled from Japan to Las Vegas and I assumed we would record his parts for the song as he's a badass guitar player, but when he arrived he said he didn't want this song because he wanted to write a song together! So we wrote a song together that appears on the game soundtrack if I'm not mistaken. Not sure what that song is called. When we started putting together the 2nd Magna-Fi record we decided to use this song as we thought it was pretty cool. If anyone has the versions with the original solos I'd like to hear them." The new song in question is likely All Hail Shadow, as Jun Senoue did contribute to the composition.

Another small note: It seems for the Sonic 3 section you used the unofficial remastered tracks rather than the original ones. One way I was able to tell was the fact that Ice Cap 1 has drums in the version you posted. In the original version, it does not.

Unironically, if MagnaFi had accepted segas deal, their band could be saved - instead the band died and all they got was a lousy edgy song in their dying album. It sucks because I really like MagnaFi. On that note, I also LOVE Broken from Sins of a divine mother; I wish they had made more music than they did.

Nice video! One thing: Jun Senoue DID use both ym2612 and Xpand!2 in the final release, but the example you showed of it is bad, because Jun didn't work on the final version of Cyberstation. Also, ym2612 is the chip that was used for sonic games on Genesis, so Jun used it to make more Genesis-like songs, not more realistic ones :/

The Rush music sounds a ton like Advance, I'm pretty sure that's even still the same instrument set. Seems like the Advance composers decided they wanted to take better advantage of the DS' infinitely better audio quality compared to the GBA, and the system's ability to play back higher quality sound samples. So they brought in Hideki Naganuma since he was THE sample man [Jet Set Radio lmao] and he just went hard with his own style

The whole thing of "it used a different VST and therefore sounds better" for Superstars is just wrong. Changing a few instruments doesn't completely change the mixing and mastering of a track, and a lot of the instruments in the final don't appear to be from either VST. The track was entirely redone, and that's why it sounds better.

If you enter the code 03 03 03 0B, 10 10 10 04, and select Hidden Palace in the level select, you're taken to Proto Palace Zone instead. This is the original layout of the Hidden Palace level from the betas, with matching functionality and music.
