Hey Adam, I live in Newberry, SC. Would have loved to have met you. The church you showed in Prosperity on the square started out as an actual stable, then it was turned into a steakhouse called The Stable Steakhouse. If you noticed the bird bath on the square in front of the church, that was where the 13th SC formed during the Civil War. That's where the men came to enlist into the Confederacy. Gausthaus Zur Elli was a German restaurant ran by miss Wendy Steiner. She was a German immigrant but unfortunately she passed away last year and the restaurant closed down whereas she did all the cooking. Everything was authentic German food. And the Coke Mural in Newberry was originally painted by the Eagle Scouts back in the early 1940's. And you said that Newberry reminded you of Hollywood? Newberry was featured in a movie back in the late 80s called Chattahoochee starring Gary Oldman and Dennis Hopper. Thanks for visiting buddy. I hope you enjoyed your stay.

If you by chance make it back back down to the Charleston area make sure you check out the Charleston Tea Garden(formerly Plantation) on Wadmalaw Island. The Angel Oak is not far from it and is the most awesome tree you will ever see. If weather permits you to come to the upstate, downtown Greenville is a must. Grab lunch at Brick St. Cafe. Downtown Pendleton near Clemson would be a good one as well. Bistro 1826 is a great spot for lunch. Be safe traveling!

Adam, I think on the Wall Mural on the Main Street in Ninety Six,...it wasn't a pop corn push cart but rather chestnuts. As in chestnuts roasting on an open fire. Roasted chestnuts sold on the street were very popular in the old days. I think pop corn is a more of a modern food choice. Hot pretzels also are popular but I think are regional to the greater New York City area. I have vivid memories of hot pretzels sold on the street in my youth, (new york).

Your comment instantly reminded me of an awesome roasted chestnuts stand that used to be set up near the corner of 3rd and Fairfax, Farmer's Market, Los Angeles back in the 80's. I loved roasted chestnuts so much, and yet I haven't had any since I was a kid, since that stand eventually closed down. Yes, I have vivid memories as well of standing in line with my entire family for a bag of fresh warm chestnuts, as that smell permeated that entire corner of the market. We would all stand around and finish it right there in that parking lot...damn...... nice memory...

I work on rural GA a lot and what you learn is every town exists for a reason. It maybe military, collage, train depot, agriculture, etc…. In some cases those reasons just vanish and when it does so does the town. The part of SC he is in existed prior to the interstate.. Many of these small towns popped up as stopping points between Charleston and Columbia, but once the interstate came in the drop in traffic killed the town. Also in that area is a town called Sumter, it was a major furniture producer back in the day, but most of that moved over seas and the empty factory’s are all that remain. Sumter exists today mainly because it’s next to Shaw AFB… but it’s a shell of its former self.

I agree as small town SC boy who moved to Atlanta. Big cities are starting to choke on their own success, and their very lack of recent prosperity might actually and ironically be the future salvation of small towns, as you pointed out. That's especially true of the ones that aren't so terribly far from the bigger cities and have a decent highway to get to them there -- and the ones where the town leadership can strike a balance between past and future.
