The Stelvio, Alfa Romeo's compact luxury SUV, made its debut in the United States. By 2025, a new breed of exciting crossovers with modern drivetrains, more space, and the choice of gas or all-electric should be on the market. Among the competing models are the BMW X3, Lexus NX, and Tesla Model Y.
After the Stelvio receives its first makeover this year, we can't wait to drive one. It has structural similarities to the very alluring Giulia sedan. With its charming demeanor and driving attributes, the charming Italian has always captured our hearts, and the new model ought to offer improved engine choices. Ultimately, gas and all-electric versions will be offered.
The redesigned SUV might also be marginally bigger, which would ease our concerns over the constrained load capacity and constrained rear legroom. More technological developments, such a larger infotainment interface, appear to be in the works. If we were to suggest any improvements, one would be a more stylish cabin.
We're hoping the redesigned 2025 model will make the Stelvio more practical, as it has always been one of the more aesthetically beautiful options in the class.
The Quadrifoglio, which sports a 2.9-liter turbocharged V-6 engine with 505 horsepower that is derived by Ferrari, was the highest model in the Stelvio lineup previously. Even though the 2024 Charger and the new model are constructed on the same platform, Alfa removed that engine for the US market. Under the engine, the Italian crossover most likely has some (North) American iron.
It is our belief that the revised gas Stelvio will be powered by the same 550-horsepower Hurricane inline-six engine from the muscle car, which powers the Charger Sixpack H.O. Launches to 60 mph should be feasible with this engine in 3.3 seconds, which is at least as quick as the Quadrifoglio. Like the Charger, all gas-powered Stelvios should come with AWD as standard, with RWD models perhaps following later.
It wouldn't surprise us if the 2.0-liter turbo-four engine from the outgoing Stelvio made a comeback to power the base engine lineup. The powertrain was still rather good, despite not being as quick as the V-6. Its 280 horsepower and 306 lb-ft of torque enable the SUV to reach 60 mph in 5.4 seconds during acceleration. That's impressive for a small, high-end SUV with a base engine.
