We had a chance to gather our company and to go out for a short spring hike. After finding this magnificent oak tree, we decided to sing a short tribute to the ones we are grateful for our freedom.
This song dates to the times when Lithuania was occupied by the Russian Empire and all the men from 16 to 40 years of age were taken to serve in the imperial army for up to 25 years.
We will never forget!!!
Lithuanian and English lyrics below:
Dainos žodžiai:
Ąžuolėlio šakos linko,
Kai mus jaunus karan rinko.
Ir surinko surikiavo,
Šautuvėliais apginklavo.
Šautuvėliai kieto plieno,
Nušaus priešus ligi vieno.
In vagonus susodzino,
Kur mus veža nieks nežino.
Mes vagonuos sėdzėdami,
Pro langelį žiūrėdami.
Matyt pievos ir klonelės,
Neregėti mūs šalelės.
Ąžuolėlio šakos linko,
Kai mus jaunus karan rinko.
English lyrics:
Oak’s branches were bending,
When us young took to war.
They took us, lined up,
Equipped with guns.
Guns out of solid steel,
Will get all of the enemies killed.
They put us in the wagons,
Where they are taking us no one knows.
While we sat in the wagons,
We watched through the window
We saw the meadows and the valleys,
Never seen in our land.
Oak’s branches were bending,
When us young took to war.
