I really love this idea of Ghidorah. He's alien, otherworldly, untouchable and absolutely terrifying. Sadly this concept doesn't work well with your tradictional monster battle, so all you really get is him byting Godzilla for very long until Godzilla can punch him and it's all over. I like how the trilogy built up Metphies as the final villain and I liked how the movie gave Maina some focus and bonding with Haruo. I was genuinly worried about Miana and that she was cooked and eaten by these cultists. Still, it suffers from the same problems the previous two did. Good but wasted ideas.

It's the best exploration of Mothra ever, think about it, what has it always been doing? Mothra always has an egg to make sure that its species survives, that has always been Mothra's greatest defense and offense, if it survives, it can eventually win. Do you think that when an insect is mating, it is thinking about love and sexuality? Do you think that a male mantis or spider finds it lovely or sexy when they are being consumed by a female during sex? No, they have sex purely out of biological survival instincts to reproduce. And the Hontua are actual insects evolved over 20k years to a humanoid form, they have the exact same mentality towards reproduction, it is logically the best way to defend their species. As any biologist would tell you, survival of a species depends on how well they are able to reproduce and evolve. And this is why there were no hints of romance involved between the relationship of the sisters and Haruo, which Haruo himself was shocked by their behaviour. To them, when Haruo proved himself to be a survivor and warrior, their idea of joining the fight is to create more life with him and win, and that the opposite, death is to lose. And a lot of people don't seem to understand why Haruo chose to die, he has become the embodiment of the cycle of vengeance and understood the cosmic ideas of the Exif, so in order to grant peace to the Houtou who have managed to live in harmony with the planet, he has to end himself and destroy all traces of Mechagodzilla so that he wouldn't become a cancer to their way of life.

The Godzilla anime trilogy as a whole is just one misstep over another. You can tell the directors don't understand or care about what made Godzilla the king of monsters. This was one of the best Godzilla series in my opinion. The ending was very beautiful and profound, wasn't expecting that. The only thing that made me sad was Mothra not having an appearance after so much allusion to her. I actually don't care that they take their time to explain the concepts, the strategies of the battles and philosophies involved, I think it's pretty engaging and you can't tell a story on that proportions without exposition. The fight scenes, though short, are very effective, beautiful and have a sense of awe, power and symbolism. And the characters might not be super complex, but are effective enough to play their roles well. For me it's a 10/10 re-imagining of the franchise.

The treatment of Ghidorah was what sold me on this volume, and I like how the Exif and Bilusado represent two extremes between which humanity, namely Haruo, are the middle ground. It’s an interesting and visually stunning treatment of the broader themes of Godzilla as a whole, namely humanity’s relationship with nature, technology, religion/philosophy, and one another, all themes very commonly explored in anime. I’ll give you that the characters aren’t terribly compelling. I can’t help but feel like they were going for a sort of Shinji from Eva vibe with Haruo, namely that of a young guy grappling with various apocalyptic, world-ending threats, but with only three volumes to work with they didn’t really do as much as they needed to fill out his character, though I did appreciate his end (and what it represents) at the conclusion. It’s a visually stunning thought piece, the series as a whole. If you went into it expecting kaiju battles, as I did, you were in for quite a surprise. But it was a surprise that intrigued me with Planet of the Monsters and made me curious to see where they were going with it, and by the time Ghidorah’s name got dropped at the end of City on the Edge of Battle I was 110% ready to see how it was going to end. And the Golden Death did not disappoint, lol! And I really liked the brief cameo of Mothra too. Again, the symbolism of what she represented was, I thought, spot on! It’s a very cerebral series. I get it. It’s lacking a lot of emotion and character compared to other films and especially compared to the Godzilla franchise as a whole. But I’m happy with it’s addition to the franchise as a wildly different and unexpected take on the classics. I’m glad you liked it more than the others, but I’m sorry the series as a whole didn’t appeal to you. Hey, different strokes for different folks ☺️👍

Ghidora is a higher dimensional being brought into this universe using the observer effect to collapse its quantum waveform into this reality, that's stuff straight out of sci-fi novels. Metphies himself is probably the most compelling character in all of Godzilla, at first seen as just a religious zealot, turned out to be the most advanced scientist and manipulator, making an argument between science and religion all by himself. On the way to discovering what's beyond the heat death of the universe, the Exif discovers a god from a higher dimension and rationalised that instead of reaching an eventual death in our finite universe, why not get consumed by a god and be part of it in a higher plane of existence. This is probably the most complex thing that has ever been written in any Godzilla.

This trilogy turned out to be the most thought provoking Godzilla film ever made, it's a shame that the average Godzilla audience just wants to see monsters fight each other and have no idea about the philosophy and scientific concepts that inspired the story. They've explored the idea of a monster as a force of nature far beyond any other kaiju story ever did and was able to tie it down to a story about humanity that is relatable. It explored everything from scientific subjects like evolution, artificial intelligence, higher dimensions, quantum physics to religion and morality, and then tied everything together in a tangible and physical way with the kaiju and the actions of the characters. It is a story about concepts and ideas fighting against each other, in fact I wish there were even less explosions and flashy stuff, it's the first time I actually wished I read something as a book than to watch it. He is the only one of his kind living. And like in the films in both the Showa and Heisei eras, mankind had to live with Godzilla even though he is a threat.

My biggest problem with the whole trilogy is that it was just boring. It concentrated so much on being a philosophical set of films that it ignored the very premise of a Godzilla film: a fun movie about kaiju rampaging or brawling. Even Godzilla 98', with all it's flaws, was at least entertaining. The Godzilla anime trilogy was just an excuse to do something different at the expense of the formula that has worked since the beginning. It would have been a lot cooler if the trilogy explored Godzilla's battles with the various kaiju briefly touched upon at the start of the first film. The final product just felt like filler until Godzilla's fight with Ghidorah, as short as that was.

I like it as well. The biggest flaws to me are the animation quality, lack of character depth (which is Gen Urobuchi's thing, for better or worse, even in his best work the characters' beliefs and ideals have depth, they as people do not), not taking full advantage of animation as a medium, with many of the action scenes also failing to impress despite the scale. I don't really have a problem with the plot, or with the characters on a surface level (like how people hate Haruo because of his personality, I thought he was fine, and Miyano Mamoru managed to act the shit out of the shallow character he was given to give scenes like the climax of the second movie the necessary emotion. That may be lost on the dub, idk), and while I wanted the monsters that were in the movie to do more visually interesting stuff, I didn't feel the need to have more monsters in it as many seem to. Overall the trilogy was a suprisingly good time if somewhat dull at times, it still managed to keep me interesting and had some really good moments. I like to see Godzilla experiment and try weirder and unconventional things, I feel there is room for that, it's not like we aren't getting more traditional Godzilla experiences from other branches of the franchise.

i very much enjoyed the anime trilogy, so it was something of a surprise to find out just how much most people didn't. Admittedly, i came into it late, and with no expectations towards the content, so i never experienced the severe disappointment the majority did for the lack of a "true" MechaGodzilla fight. The only real problem i had was with how massive of a downer the ending is, but i do understand why it had to happen the way it did.

I thought that the characters were the best of the Anime Trilogy and I know how some people would argue it was too little too late, if you just forget the first two movies it is better. The fight and the ending are the only things that keep it from being in my top 10.

I'm always surprised at the praise this film gets, I personally think it is way more boring than the others. Barely anything happens comparatively to the others, especially considering the animation. Most of this film is comprised of people standing. Yes, the last two also had very stilted characters, but this one has the worst case of this in my opinion, merely being there to dump exposition. I get why people like this film, but for me it is my least favorite Godzilla film made so far.

I heavily disagree with your opinion on this. The new ideas they introduce are not very interesting, while it does have a lovecraftian edge, it does not befit the trilogy. There were great lines, and great moments, but it falls flat. All the movies have their own agenda, the first movie is shot from a simple human perspective: trying their hardest to outsmart nature in an attempt to show dominance after being unable to accept their place in the established hierarchy. While the second movie is similar in that ideology, it is not identical, the second movie exerts using human ingenuity to transcend their physical limitations and once again attain dominance in the face of something more powerful. Then the final movie attempts to give in to an opposing higher power, in rebellion against its local deity to prove that even in subservience humanity is at least higher in the hierarchy, yet they fall short, succumbing to mortal blemishes which tie them to their world and their understanding, Haruo's sacrifice is his acceptance. At least in death, he can provide peace to those who want to live and yet never give up his pride as a dominant being. Sounds great like that, but if you take the film for what it is, you only really get that people are back where they started. Most of the returning humans are dead, and Godzilla still reigns. Where did this trilogy go? Its a midlife crisis. But atleast the previous film was enjoyable, The Planet Eater spends so much time showing its religious roots it forgets that its a Godzilla movie. The Ghidorah and Godzilla fight is awful, the human efforts surrounding that are awful, the only good part about this movie is Metpheses (not sure how to spell his name) Speech on God/Ghidorah. His genuine faith and loyalty to his destroyer, and how far his people will go to serve Ghidorah is quite interesting. Aside from that, everything else is bland. 5/10.

This is not a movie that gets me thinking, this is a movie trilogy that makes me think someone like Roland Emmerich took the helm again. This is someone using the name to make their own creative freedom, only this one being that technology and advancement is evil, and that's a god awful statement. This 3rd movie especially was not about monsters but about religious statements and virtues, and believing that humanity making advancements and evolving is wrong. Even Godzilla himself is portrayed badly, he's supposed to be the balance for the world, nature's protection, but this is not a world that's flourishing, this is a world under his iron claw, the animals here are nothing but his own spawn, if anything, he's not balanced the world but conquered it. The humans are left to stay stagnant forever as his oppressive nature flourishes and threatens anything that didn't evolve from or around him.

Imo they did a great job with the whole trilogy and I actually like that it ISN'T just Kaijus fighting to become the King or whatever! Yes the first movie wasted a lot of potential but as a whole I absolutely loved the Idea of "what If Godzilla and the Planet evolved even further than ever before on its own"! And what I really liked was that Gidorah was not only a Monster from outer Space but also a Monster that just Warps Space Time with its mere presence! Besides that, the Animations and cinematography are great, the Characters a little lackluster but everything else was really good! All in all I give the trilogy as a whole a 8/10!

This trilogy is what happens when toho is too controlling is literally prevents the director from what he wanted to truly do (kadokawa allowed him to do whatever he wanted for gamera rebirth. The animation is barely used to it's full potential here with toho telling polygon pictures to avoid animating as many fights as possible, so not only are the human animations janky but the monster stuff is incredibly held back by toho's attempt to copy shin gojira's formula while forgetting what made shin gojira work. This trilogy was made for casual viewers more so than actual fans and yet it barely pulled in said casual viewers in Japan. Toho shouldn't sideline the fans in favor of trying too hard to appeal to new potential fans. It's wasted potential 3 times in a row. The prequel novels is what we should of gotten as the anime trilogy

I agree. There are so many good ideas, but the slooooow pacing and lack of character development cripples this trilogy. It's so sad, because there is so much run time that could have been spent on the characters so that we, the audience, can understand and care about them. But instead, so much is spent on the ideas and the technobabble used to explain it. Gen Urobuchi is so obsessed with expressing his dark themes and nihilistic ideas that he forgets to write a good story. He needs an editor that can make his scripts compelling to his audience. But he is very popular and successful, so I'm not sure if he is willing to swallow his ego to do so.

Haven't seen the new Godzilla film yet but I feel this is the most powerful version of the true king, Ghidorah. It's an actual planet eater which is nice because he never felt that way before, true cosmic horror, that scene on the space station was an amazing opening for this new and radical interpretation of Ghidorah. Now that the anime trilogy is over I am excited to see what live action ideas they go with, they can use these ideas that are just touched upon and expand them into something better. Normally for me, I don't mind not having a central character or protagonist. As long as the story is presented well, not having a protagonist is not a big deal. But here, sadly, there is a protagonist who is a stereotypical anime "angsty teen" for the most of the series and the rest of the cast who are basically placeholders. Towards the end (second-half of the second movie and some of the last movie) some of the characters do get better and makes the whole experience more palatable. As far as Godzilla itself is concerned, I really don't have any complaint. I don't mind there not being a physical brawl. When fighting humans, Godzilla is just too big to brawl and with monsters, the breath is much stronger and has better range. So it makes sense for me.

I've watched the trilogy for the first time last week. I didn't really follow any news about it back then, and all I knew was that MechaGodzilla was a city and that the trilogy was terrible all around. Not only I found the trilogy MUCH more enjoyable and interesting than I thought it would be, it's also been extremely frustrating how it's impossible to discuss it anywhere near the fanbase, because people just go blind rage mode on this topic. I've since learned that the movies had a very dishonest marketing campaign that promised a lot of things the movies, from my perspective as someone who watched them all at once without any exposure to the marketing, never really promise. I mean I guess my only real disappointment as far as "I was promised something and they didn't deliver" was that I expected Gidorah to fully materialize a body after Haruo stops Metphies, because the Gidorah in the visions has a body. And it was disappointing how he just went away. But other than that I didn't feel cheated that the movie didn't deliver on something they promised. Now they are a very different entity to pretty much every other Godzilla movie and I understand people who don't like it because they wanted bigger focus on the monsters, or because they didn't want the futuristic/sci-fi setting, and so on, that's completely understandable. But while the movies do have several flaws (as do most Godzilla movies, let's be real here for a second), I really don't understand why the hate for this is so strong. Some fans act like the people involved in this movie killed their families and then raped the corpses. It's just fucking tiresome to talk about it because even if I make it very clear what my problems with the movie are before talking about what I find worthwile in them, I still get dismissed, yelled at, and offended for no reason other than I like a movie they don't, or that I don't think it's the worst thing the franchise has to offer.

There are actually some of us who enjoyed the trilogy, the rest of the majority of Godzilla fans just want to see kaiju battles. This trilogy has by far the most compelling concepts and themes compared to every other Godzilla ever made, just a pity that there wasn't much action. It would have been better as a book instead of a film.
@42Caio

@@GuyWithAnAmazingHat I don't know about the most compelling, I think the movies that try to take Godzilla seriously and imbue it with themes about war, weapons and natural disasters manage to be pretty compelling as well. I agree the trilogy tackles more complex and contemplative themes than any other in the franchise, but while they were done well, they're also well-worn shoes in the greater scope of both sci-fi movies and anime. Just told through the Godzilla mythos, which gives them a fresh coat of paint.
@GuyWithAnAmazingHat

@@42Caio Yea they are definitely concepts straight from science and sci-fi, but it's the furthest exploration into sci-fi that Godzilla has ever taken to. Also this is the best exploration of Mothra ever, think about it, what has it always been doing? The entire trilogy being made of such extreme stretches of logic and science made the trilogy really thought provoking for me.
@42Caio
5 жыл бұрын
@@GuyWithAnAmazingHat It's up in the air whether the Hotua are insects evolved into a humanoid form or some humans who evolved further under Mothra's influence. Not to mention they are analogue to the Mothra fairies from the Showa era. The fact they can reproduce with humans indicates the later to me, but neither is really confirmed. And I think the twins show great interest in Haruo from the get go, way before he proves himself. They follow the humans to MechaGodzilla city purely out of curiosity to watch him and they don't really seem concerned with the other huamans. Maina saves him during the fight by sending him a telephatic warning about an incoming attack. Both also react in negative ways to Haruo and Yuko's kiss. Also, while Miana asked to "connect" with him for the reasons you talked about (winning via continued survival of the species), Maina was afraid of losing him. To me that's enough to justify that yes, the Hotua do have notions of romantic love.
