Ed is a living encyclopedia when it comes to steam locomotives. He's got to be the luckiest man alive as he has a deep passion for steam power, and gets paid to work with, and operate these mighty huffing puffing steel beasts like the 844 and 4014 every day.

In my opinion it's actually in the same, if not worse, condition than it has been in other photos. That's not to say it's a total hunk of junk, I was actually pretty surprised seeing it up close at the condition it was in considering how much has been taken off of it; I suspect that's because they kept it in such good shape for so long while it was being used and it's been stored indoors for so long since then. I've heard that the boiler on 838 was actually in better condition than the 844's before they began their 2.5 year long restoration on that locomotive because it didn't have all the scale and other junk built up inside of it.
