The outstanding GM SD40 paved the way for the end of large, supersized UP puchases. The SD40-2 finished them off. EMD manufactured more than 3000 SD40-2s, according to Wikipedia - and Union Pacific bought over 600 of them.

Trackside in the 1970's and early 80's was still a delightful experience what with the variety of motive power to be had, not to mention cabooses still patrolling the mains. Then we had the Staggers Act and everything else that ruined railroading (although the "suits" and Wall St. think it was great) to where the number of Class I RR's are counted on one hand with tons of scab Nowhere to Nowhere 10 mph short lines littering the landscape. On the mains now, it's either wide cab EMD's or wide cab GE's. AMTRAK's Genesis locos are a fright to behold. For me, a cranky 50-something, a train horn isn't hardly worth a second glance now. Thank heavens for model RR's where you can create a world as YOU want it not as it's been crammed down your throat!!! What is particularly interesting about this locomotive is it's u-shaped front end, it was the only engine of its kind, with no second generation variations. It's quite a shame all were scrapped , just goes to show you that this engine was considered an "experimental" series never to last .

One reason why Union Pacific retired all its double diesels except for its Centennial #6936 was economics - during the trying days of the 1970s UP was looking to save money on maintenance of its motive power fleet and indeed UP's double diesels were expensive to maintain. And so Union Pacific invested in the SD40-2 beginning in 1972 and the railroad hasn't looked back since.

When GM gets it right, they ace it, and the SD40/SD40-2 is perhaps the finest locomotive built. I heard that virtually all of them are still active. (Wikipedia) Some are rebuilds (UP SD40N's) and many SD40's/SD40-2's are now in yard switching and branch line service. They're the best looking of the freight locomotives IMHO.
