The Big Boy 4014 is not running yet but UP expects it to be running sometime in 2019. Also Challenger 3985 is sidelined for major repairs which will be done once the Big Boy is running. So for now 844 is it as far as UP steam is concerned since it will not allow non-UP owned steam engines on its rails. It is fortunate that UP has preserved this engine and never retired it from its active roster (although its number was changed to 8444 from 1962-1989 to allow a GP30 to wear 844) as there are few examples of its type still in existence today (Milwaukee Road 261 comes to mind since it was also built by Alco).

@sawspitfire422

Something else you might find interesting is that even though the FEF-3 locomotives were designed in the late 1930s, the rods were made from a high strength molybdenum alloy which allowed them to be made much thinner and lighter than traditional designs. This in turn meant the total reciprocating mass was incredibly low given the 4,500bhp design power, allowing them to run smoothly at mind boggling speeds

My mother worked in a little telegraph shack in or near Simi Valley in the dark of night during WWII. She would have loved this video! She used to hand orders up to these drivers on a little cane pole. Can you imagine standing 2 feet off the track as one of these beasts can barreling by at 70+ mph! One night it was raining like hell and she was so cold and wet that when the train barreled by she just let go and peed her pants. I'd love to know where she actually worked. She said the trains came out of the mountains hauling ass. One young woman failed to let go of the cane as the driver put his arm through the loop. It yanked the driver out of the cab, and she was thrown up over the train to her death.

They dont put the diesel in for extra power or speed (most freight engines are geared for 75). They do it for the dynamic brakes and to help fuel mileage (not exactly alot of coaling towers anymore..). And for those saying they should "push" her more... Remember, extra speed/extra load = extra wear on one-of-a-kind parts. There are no large steam locomotive manufacturers anymore, same for the parts. Edd Dickens explained it best in his video on the subject

Cab signals, perhaps automatic train stop, adequate signal spacing with advance warning aspects, etc. Brightline, if it goes faster than 79 will have these as well. I really like this video, the 844 is doing about what she was designed to do, cruising at 80. The fireman has a very good oil fire, no smoke [even with a fine fire coal would have some flyash]. the engineer has it about knotched up to dead center [note the valve motion]. Though she has only an auxiliary tender and six cars, she is hauling a nice load, that auxiliary tender is worth two or three cars. It is the Wyoming open spaces that are putting your commentors off. I rode this line in 1978 on the SF Zephyr, and I am telling you they went fast then, we were passing up the vehicles on I-80 and you know even then with the double nickle speed limit those truckers were not doing that out in those areas. #844 was at one time the only steam locomotive authorized by Amtrak in the mid 1970s, I remember reading an account of her pulling the SFZ from Cheyenne to Denver on a ferry move. I believe 4449 was also granted that authorization later on. Perhaps someday, I wil get a chance to see 844 run in person.

The reason Union Pacific switched to diesel to begin with is that it's more cost-efficient. If they had the resources that you seem to think they did, I'm sure they would have kept a few more in service, if not for heritage than because often, these beauties are both more powerful and quicker than diesels. It's just that it wasn't economical to keep more steam engines running. Aside from the HUGE amount of maintenance required, you also have to employ more people to do said maintenance, and also maintain water and coaling towers...
