Having been trackside with 4014, I can attest to the sheer awe I was in when I felt the ground trembling. Even my mother who was well over 200 yards away said she felt the ground shaking. I've seen 4014 in person twice, she was the ultimate birthday present as she came back to Texas literally the weekend of my 21st birthday. I'll never forget it.

The ground trembles with any steam locomotive on the main line or even on heritage lines passing by and that’s a way of showing that they’re coming through along with the majestic whistle. Makes you feel like you’re in a dream in reality

82 last Sept ('17) trains have been important to me since I began to talk. I think choochoo was my third word after momma and daddy. Wish I could have been there, sniff.

Kawan, (something happened to my 1st answer??) Anyway, That I couldnt say. I dont live anywhere close to K C to have heard the news. I would suspect that like the Baltimore museum for the B&O it was to preserve the history of steam for our progeny. Kinda parenthetical but In 1998 I passed thru Memphis on my way from Phoenix to Bristol TN and got to talk with AND shake the hand of a man who had been the driver of one of those GREAT articulateds. We stopped at a hotel for the night and met him in the lobby. I felt very privileged!!!!!!!

calvin, there are videos showing many of the controls but to try and explain the several DOZEN would be near impossible. Suffice to say they help monitor the fire to make steam, keep steam going where its supposed to, and keep "water in the glass". Perhaps the most important of all the istruments is the "glass"! It tells the water level in the boiler. If the level EVER goes below the crown sheet a boiler explosion is imminent!
