I shelled out a pretty nice pile of cash to get every game in the series. Currently playing Pea Ridge and absolutely love the Blind Sword system. For someone that has had issues with playing games to completion or even taking the time to set games up, this series has captured my imagination and more importantly for me, is fun, Interesting and keeps my attention so that I have been playing all the way to the end of the battles, and then diving into the next battle. This series has rejuvenated my love of wargaming and I plan on picking up Shiloh as soon as it comes out.

My buddy who's an expert in Civil WAr says you are correct, however I would submit to you that an no time in the Civil War did the SOuth have more troops in any battle than perhaps First Mannassas. This is because of the overwhelming advantage the North had, making Civil War games unfair to a Southern Player. The only reason the South lasted four years is because of their excellent leadership compared to the North's blubbering bafoonary.....Anyway 'Zilla for President!!!

Good Video. Looks great. I love seeing passion people have in what people do. I am un familar witn the series. But when it was talked about chit pulls it reminded me of one of my favorite Civil War games Across 5 Aprils. A5A has a Shilo scenario. My favorite game I played was A5A Gettysburg. We played from 9am to 6pm. What was surpising things developed almost like what really happend. Culps Hill, Picketts Charge. What decide the game was Little Round Top. On day 2. The Grey kicked my off. I did retake it only to be kicked off again. This time I could not get forces to retake and I lost. I an curious how this game plays compared to A5A?

@@ZillaBlitz I did , ideveloped like history except I lost as the Union on day 2. What at the time was unique was the cit pull for who was activated. The game has easy rules and is realative fast play. With out game my opponent took time with hid decistions

Nice interview. I have a question, which isn't criticism. Shiloh isn't my favorite Civil War Battle. That said, I've played a few games on it, and bought, but haven't played, the recent GMT Shiloh game. I've also been gathering games on Civil War battles. Longstreet Attacks in the Blind Swords system (along with the first Revolution game, if I can find it.) I've also bought the Worthington Seven Pines and Antietam games. But not their Shiloh game. So... When he said he was dissatisfied with other games, I was really interested in why. Not saying I wanted you to grill him on why or plunge into an historical debate. That probably wouldn't be appropriate. And yet he's been around long enough not to be offended. Long time gamers know we all have opinions. So I was genuinely curious about his. I think your questions did elicit some possible reasons. Printing the back of the map was a great idea. So is the starting point and the WWI reference. The way I understand it, A Most Fearful Sacrifice (which I missed) was modified to handle bigger battles. So I would have been interested in comparing Gettysburg with Shiloh in regards to both systems. I think it's wise to focus on the first day. As I understand it, if the Union survives, the second day is a beat down. But that again raises the question: Why Shiloh? [Just as an aside - and definitely not the purpose of your interview - while I don't buy Grant the Drunk, I don't have an opinion on his performance at Shiloh. I know it's gotten a lot of criticism. That said, how does the designer's view of Grant's performance affect the game design or play, if it does? And also the increased chances for the Confederates to win?]
@ZillaBlitz

These are all great questions, Mike! I get the sense that the Shiloh reasons are the ones you mention, and maybe some others too. I think we could have easily chatted for a hour on the game. :)

@@ZillaBlitz I've enjoyed the recent interviews. You're doing a great job. Just wanted raise some issues in case you decide to tackle Civil War battles and systems after your massive Bulge Festival 🙂 I also generally agreed with your response to a comment on whether the disparities between Union and Confederate resources make Civil War games deeply flawed or impossible. However, we've all seen the problem, even at the battle level when certain situations make the games almost unplayable - or more accurately not worth playing. A Civil War example might be Fredericksburg. IIRC SPI included it in a Blue & Gray Quad. It's hard to see how to make that disaster interesting, though in this case the Union is on the receiving end.
@ZillaBlitz

Yeah, those one-sided battles I find challenging to get so invested in, unless you can add in a bit of alternative history. :)
@mikem668

@@ZillaBlitz At Fredericksburg, it would have to be science fiction alternative history. Beating the historical outcome by comparing your catastrophic losses to the actual carnage is crazy when the attacker never should have attacked in the first place. You might be able to argue that delaying actions - like Thermopolae - are exceptions. But 300 Spartans versus a zillion Persians? Though IIRC there's a recent game on the topic that's supposedly interesting. And I guess games on the Fall of Rome have similar issues. I think it's a question of what you can learn versus time. In Space Invader you know you're gonna die, but you're shooting for the highest score. No setup time, just play again and again. That's not true of a physical wargame. Tactical games have both meeting engagements and delaying actions. Or special ops. Your Lock n Load videos showed the can be interesting, though I'd argue the Normandy one felt more like a puzzle. The Japanese one felt real. The Japanese were outnumbered, but it wasn't Custer's last stand. I do like some of the State of Siege games, where you know it will end badly, and yet you make decisions that could plausibly result in victory. A reason gamers like games like US Civil War and On To Richmond II. At a strategic or operational level it feels like you have more control over the outcome.

One thing that concerns me is that the Civil War isn't a good arena for wargamers because.... South is outnumbered.... three to four to one in manpower 10 to one in industry and RR 10 to 1 in naval. to me this makes it inherently bad for wargamers. Am I wrong? P.S. I bought Jutland at age 14 in 72 I beat the designer....::)
@ZillaBlitz

I guess I'd argue that those things are more important for a strategic level game on the Civil War, but they don't have a bearing on individual battles.
