Just curious, at what age can you put a bearded dragon in a bioactive terrarium and does it matter how big the tank is if they are babies. Also do you ever have to put more bio shock in the tank
@TheBioDudeJoshHalter
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Justin, you can definitely keep bearded dragons of any life stage in a bio-active setup. I would generally keep tank size relative to the size of the reptile, so that they are not expending more energy than they need to for foraging. You should never have to replace or replenish the BioShot once you have it established in the setup, but you will periodically need to replenish the biodegradables that serve as a food source for the BioShot.

I know this video is two years old but so the bulb in the deep dome (on the left) is a mercury vapor bulb correct? I have a 75 gallon too, i keep reading everywhere that those kinds of bulbs need to be on a lamp stand and not on the screen lid, is that true? Because I don’t want to have to buy a stand if I don’t have too, my dragon is roughly 7-8 inches away from his basking bulb if i were to replace it with a powersun bulb. I know i see yours is not on a stand. Just confused if i should get an 80w or 100w powersun bulb. Hope i get a response 😢 i just want the best for my beardy, hes also close to being 3 years old. I just came across your product as I'm interested in owning a beardie one day. It looks really high quality and would make any dragon happy. I do have a question, though: does it make it easier or harder for your dragon to bond with you? Mainly I think I'm trying to look for the best of both worlds.

super late to this vid but a question about your water dish here!! it looks like terracotta- is this safe? i have a venus fly trap and it was originally in a terracotta pot, until i found out that those pots leech minerals into water and would kill my plant. of course, a VFT is not a beardie, so maybe you’ve taken this into account already or it’s a negligible effect on the water.
@TheBioDudeJoshHalter
3 жыл бұрын
honestly it depends on the actual piece. most are undyed, unsealed and therefore safe to use for most reptiles. venus fly traps are one of those particular plants, they need specific things and arent the easiest. as long as its not broken up chewed and ingested.

in the desert, temps drop at night because there’s no sun to keep them up. same goes for tanks. you can turn everything off at night and your animal will be just fine, and may even do better with this change because it better simulates a day/night cycle.

I hear a lot of people specifically say not to mist a bearded dragon and to keep them very dry. I don’t know either way cause I don’t have one. I just saw one tonight at the pet store and he followed me around and now I want one. So I’m doing as much research as possible. So are you misting for the plants and bugs or is it for the dragon?
@HercoVanDyk
6 жыл бұрын
Humidity on these guys are seasonal, iirc. The misting and watering here is for the plants. :)
@TheBioDudeJoshHalter
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. The misting is and watering is for the plants, but also to provide humidity for the dragon. While they are not tropical, dragons do better with a moderate humidity level of 45-50% or so, with occasional spikes up to 60%. That being said, by misting you are creating a humid micro climate on the cool side as the heat light will evaporate most of this moisture from the hot side. This aids in natural hydration. Keeping them in a completely arid environment can dehydrate them, especially babies.
@BaronVonBeckinstien

Hi Tayla. I usually mist my enclosure everyday, and water the succulents lightly at their root base once a week. The main thing you want to focus on with water is the bottom drainage area. The bottom layer of your soil should be dark which is where all of your excess moisture will be. The middle layer will be drier, and the tope layer should be completely dry. I recommend checking out this video for maintenance for this soil here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1qWKy5N8kIujrKg

I’m asking because I have no idea how these tanks are made so I don’t know whether the insects have a way to get out or not x.x Again, amazing job!

Hi James , You would go about setting up an enclosure for babies just like Hercule's enclosure; but you would scale it down to size for the babies. We offer various sized kits on our website: www.thebiodude.com/collections/lizard-bioactive-kit/products/bearded-dragon-lizard-bioactive-kit Have a nice day!

I wonder how bad the bio set ups smell.. what I mean is when my breadie 💩s it smells awful and I remove it quickly. If he is 💩ing and u allow it to set there it has got to stink???
@olyvia1380

it can smell but my springtails take care of my snake’s poop pretty quickly. the smell of the plants and dirt disguise it somewhat. i think josh has mentioned using plants like basil and mint (dont quote me on those specifically) in beardie tanks to cover up the smell somewhat too.

What are the leaves for? That is the only part I do not like. Makes it look too real. Too much like a dirty unkept garden. Other than that, amazing looking. Going to be building my guy a large 100+ gallon for his next tank before his 2 year birthday. I have been using sand and he seems fine with it. I may do a half sand half and half of this stuff you got.

leaf litter keeps moisture in the substrate (so ambient humidity stays down) and provides hiding spots and food for the clean-up crew bugs. also, yes, it does make it look more real and that’s kind of the goal.
