Finally got around to finishing this mod! Thanks for the detailed overview:) A couple notes for anyone wanting to do it: The provided motherboard bracket STL is flipped - you can print another one with the correct orientation or use the existing bracket. If you do use the existing bracket you can remove the handle so there's more space for the motherboard, as the array won't fit otherwise. Yasu printed some washers for securing the LED driver that aren't included in the STLs - you'll need to print some or use some additional washers to attach it. My LED array was wired incorrectly so didn't work initially. The plug was ++-- instead of +-+-, so I just needed to pop the pins out of the JST connector and swap them over. There are a significant amount of grid lines as the array is too far away from the LCD. The manufacturer recommends a 35-36mm gap between the array and the LCD and there's currently a ~65mm gap with the supplied bracket. I put a spacer in between the bracket and the printer base and it's fixed the gridding:)

Congrats on completing the mod! It sounds like most manufacturers are now offering arrays with shorter focal length lenses which were not available a few years ago at the time of the video. I probably will make a point of adding some spacers as an option for folks attempting the mod with shorter focal length arrays. Also will dig up or recreate those plastic washers I printed. I just need to find time for personal projects again rather than be swamped by work all the time now.

@@HiroCreations Same issue with me and personal projects - I intended on doing this mod a loooong time ago haha. I bought the array over a year ago, same link, so I imagine it's the same one? If it helps, I tested and around 25-35mm seems to be the ideal size for the spacer but that'll obviously vary based on the array. Thanks again for the mod - really looking forward to printing on it!

Yep! Waiting on the manufacturer who let me test some early release boards actually launch the screens for sale (they were supposed to in Dec). Short term the only easy to plug and play 5.5" mono screens will be 1080p (same as the original sonic mini). I have been hunting around for 4k Monos but the issue is they are either not available yet or use ridiculously complicated and finnicky HDMI driver boards that essentially make it an advanced upgrade again.

@HiroCreations

Changing the array is doable but it also means you need to swap out the fans/power supply in order to supply the required 24v power (stock uses 12v). Having printed extensively with both paraled arrays and stock cob + reflector arrays--the stock lighting setup is much better than I expected with slightly slower cure times and slightly less detail when you use a macro lens to compare them. Most people won't see a difference between a paraled array and the stock array.

I just recently found your videos and they are great, is there a chance that you might try to build a base plate for an 8.9-inch mono screen? I am thinking of making a new case with a bigger build plate. Everything from your mod remains the same except a bigger case, and perhaps the upgrade z-axis mod for photon. Almost the same as mono X

I have a larger scratch build in the works, unfortunately 3d printing base plates for anything larger than 6" does not work well due to how much they flex under the weight of the vat and resin. I'm quietly experimenting with ACM plate and printed fittings to see if that has enough rigidity, but likely I will have to swap to a milled aluminum plate (hoping to make a design that can be done with a desktop CNC router like a shapeoko.

Very good video. Since the last one I'm still thinking about the mod while looking at my photon that was not used for months. However as mentioned for this price (or even cheaper on a sale) you can get anycubic mono but I was wondering if there can be achieved some significant advantages over ready solution: 1) Although exposure time looks super quick I find a lifting speed evenly important - is it possible to modify it to go closer to 100 or even apply some vroom method/gcode for >240? 2) It seems that even, straight light source allows to get better details even with only 2k screen. It was the case with the first phrozen sonic over regular photon and now it can be the case with Uniz IBEE (at least it is a argument from 3dprintingpro review). How is a light distribution right now? Can it be somehow improved?
@HiroCreations
3 жыл бұрын
Definitely, I'm rigorously testing the Vroom speeds on a control printer as I would like to know what harsher pull forces will do the FEP/Screen before I feel comfortable talking about the Vroom speeds--aside from that, chituboard makes it easy to set custom speeds and accelerations with their Gcode parameter file. The Duobond/Epax light source I used in this mod is the best reasonably priced collimating light array I have used so far and definitely produces much more even, yet straight light than even the paraled arrays from either Phrozen, Anycubic and Elegoo. The only way to really improve on that is to have custom optics built but that gets expensive in a hurry with quotes like $40-60 per single lens on a array that needs at least 20 lenses for a small SLA. That being said, the best optics in the world won't save your print quality if the correct lens focal length is not used (the issue cropping up for a lot of the retail mono printers) or if the resin exposure settings has not be correctly calibrated and is being over exposed--or has a tendency to swell during the polymerization reaction. Again I don't really want to fully knock the COB and reflector arrays as I've been really astounded by the crisp details I am getting with the Creality LD-002Hs that are virtually indistinguishable from the same models printed on machines with good collimated light until you examine them with a microscope or macro lens. I'm collecting data here and definitely will make some content with my results and conclusions at some point in the future.

Thanks for this follow up. I was just chatting to some folks on one of the forums about this mod. It sounds like some of the LCD manufacturers are putting out mono replacements for RGB machines like the LD-002R. I wonder if that will be more plug and play? Though it sounds like your mods go a step farther anyways. Your speeds are pretty slick. Looking forward to hearing more about your resin finds, and maybe some time you can share a bit about the types of prints you do, are you making your own supports? Are you using Lychee? Or Chitu? Thanks again :) As for nicknames for the hot modded racer you made. What about the Mechacubic Photon! Like Mechagodzilla :P Might need a silver paint job though...

Good suggestions on printer names! I am really happy with Chitu so far for support generation and slicing (got my settings dialed in to the point where it peels off like butter and is hard to tell where the support marks are. Yeah 5.5" mono screens are coming soon--the downside short term is that the first generation of them will be FHD, but 4k versions are not far behind once they resolve the issue of needing to use additional lanes (forcing the connection to be HDMI rather than the simpler but lower bandwidth mipi ribbon cable). I have a video on this recorded and edited for swapping the board screen for another OG photon or doing a screen only swap and updating the board firmware on the Elegoo Mars and Creality LD-002H. Just waiting for the manufacturer to release the screen and firmware publicly. Personally the extra half inch you gain diagonally allows me to print all the products I sell without needing to use a larger and more expensive SLA screen. $55 for a 6" DXQ mono is pretty cheap if they last an average of 2k hours of run time. (8.9" monos still are costing me between $175 and $250 for a roughly 35% increase in screen area over a 6".
