You really should update your video title because its very misleading and I ended up wasting a ton of time. You may not know this but the settings you mentioned in this video do not exist on the non pro mini 3 except for the joystick settings and I ended up wasting time trying to google why the settings are missing. The only camera setting that existed was white balance and the exposer settings which I agree on keeping set at auto. The only time I use manual mode is when taking individual photos but messing with exposer settings when shooting video is a complete waste of time unless your maybe shooting indoors.

Many thanks Ted! Again, you seem to be the only one in KZitem, who is not praising a)180°-rule b)use of ND-filters c)filming in manual mode! You are my hero! 😎
@TedNemeth
Жыл бұрын
Yeah buddy! the 180 Shutter rule is very important with boring land cameras (mirrorless/DSLR) because the subject is generally much closer to the camera so motion blur is very prominent. But with a flying camera, motion blur is simply much much less noticeable, and cinematography is much more important. Just my opinion. That’s why I say AUTO exposure is essential: it keeps exposure ALWAYS correct and now allows you to focus on creativity (and stop fussing over filters all the time!). If its a super bright sunny day: put on an ND64 in AUTO exposure.

I watched two of yours so far and REALLY appreciate your straightforward and easy to understand approach to your tutorials. I tried watching another guys video on filters and he went right into shutter speed without first identifying the correlation between the two and seemed to be just trying to impress rather than actually teach. Other videos are too long and drawn out but yours seem to be just the right length to get the information across without the unnecessary filler. Really liking your videos and can't wait to watch more. I feel like I'm actually FINALLY learning valuable stuff so THANKS!

Your video is about the Mini 3 not the Mini 3 Pro so you should leave out material that only applies to the Pro. The Mini 3 does not have 10-bit nor does it record D-Cinelike so that was a considerable amount of "air time" that didn't need to be in this video. It will likely confuse the dickens out of the more basic Mini 3 user. Your other material was great.

Great video with some good point - I shoot most of the time in auto as well, and use the same filter during bring day lights. In some cases exposure lock in needed, as you don't want the drone to shift exposure during your shot when filming like a tower, or when you are flying though something. But I agree most of the time auto exposure is sufficient. Can you really sustain a professional drone business with a Mini 3 Pro?

@TedNemeth

hey my friend! I found it useful to exposure lock on the C2 button so it can quickly/easily be accessed. Basically the idea is there’s some scenes where you don’t want the auto exposure to change the exposure. It’s definitely a subject / creative choice. Generally speaking you always want correct exposure (hence auto exposure). But suppose…..maybe…..you’re flying and you descend down under some tree cover. It might be your creative choice to keep the exposure dark (under exposed) …to give a dark mysterious look in the scene. In that case….you could hit your AE LOCK button just as you are about to go under the trees. Then when you ascend back up you can quickly unlock the exposure and go back to proper exposure. Purely a creative choice. No right or wrong.

Hi, I do like your instructions and tips for drone imaging. I'm a non professional and only hobbyist , but a comment / question on the Auto White balance . If you use a drone and possibly a GoPro or similar and want to combine these videos in a project , would it not be easier to have a fixed White Balance ? What if , during the flight , the weather changes , say from sunny to cloudy, would that not affect the white balance settings ?
@TedNemeth
Жыл бұрын
hello my flying filmmaker friend! I’m not the best person to answer that question because my drone is in auto white balance 100% of the time. This allows me to focus 100% of my time & attention on creativity / cinematography. Yes technically/theoretically,…. matching the color temperature on different cameras should help when combining footage on a timeline to match a little better.

Hey Ted...totally agree with you regarding manual exposure. I was flying my Mini 3 Pro over the Manatee river about a month ago and if I was watching all the settings I would have lost my drone. Unknown at the time, the mini 3 Pro sometimes drifts over water, it has something to do with the down facing sensors. I had 16 satellites and I just wanted the drone to hover while I was checking it's location - it was in line of site, but I lost it in the sun. If I was watching all the outputs for not being on manual like you listed, I wouldn't have noticed my drone drifting NE up the manatee river. So.. automatic settings certainly played a big role in me finding the drone as it drifted away. I know I could have used RTH, but I'm the kind of guy that gets crazy if I am not controlling my drone - especially when I have line of site. Another great vid man! Love your stuff. Did you get my email re: Mexico?

Cool tips you shared in this video. So this Cine profile dji added is actually pseudo and there is no way to film more mid tones and avoid the clipping super bright areas. Was the shot at 17:30 captured through a ND 64 filter? I wonder whether a stronger ND could rescue more of that clipped part of the sky/sun
@TedNemeth
Жыл бұрын
hey buddy! thank you for watching. everything i express in my videos is just my opinion born from my own experience and extensive testing. I encourage everyone to do their own testing. When it comes to the D-cine profile in the Mini 3 Pro….i personally think it’s NOT flat enough, therefore not actually giving enough additional dynamic range to justify the work of restoring all the colors AND correct exposure. Your second question…would a stronger ND filter have been able to keep highlight details. Well…..the starting point for any scene is to properly expose the subject. and let the shadows and highlights fall where they may. That is what I do. A stronger ND filter POSSIBLY would have underexposed the subject AND lost all details in the shadows. For me…..i don’t really care. I properly expose the subject THEN focus on all the many different composition decisions. I don’t waste time worrying about fine details in the shadows or highlights. Some of the greatest photos & movies in history have poor dynamic range and lots of grain/noise. But the storytelling is strong and the composition strong. So that’s what I focus on. Instead of spending time trying to inch towards a more technically better image. I focus on lighting the subject properly then composition.

Thanks Ted, I’m just a hobbyist and I’ve recently got a Insta 360 X3 camera and so had a go at using it in conjunction with my drone footage on that video. Unfortunately the X3 video quality doesn’t compare to the quality of the Mini 3 Pro especially in low light.

Ted, I totally agree with you. I played around with D-log and different Luts a lot. It's so time consuming and nearly all scenario's auto mode just does the job fine! Only point is that I lock my exposure in the direction I want to film to get the same exposure overall when turning the drone. I have a question about your stick settings for the Mini 3 Pro. Do you think this settings are also usable for the Mavic 3 Classic? I have both drones. Greetings from a subscriber from The Netherlands 🇳🇱

wow you have two incredible flying cameras there! Congrats. I have flown the Mavic 3 Classic but wasn’t able to test any sensitivity changes to the controller. I’ve flow just about every DJI drone and have the same general feeling that the Normal and Sport mode are just fine for me. Its the Cine mode that needs to be slowed down quite a bit. Worth testing. Fly safe!

@@TedNemeth I had been shooting manual for years, second nature, jobbing as a freelance photographer. I even go back to manual focus film cameras but droning is a completely new beast and realise it’s time to put more faith in the tech. So far you seem to have all the creative angles covered. The inspiration I needed for this (ad)venture:) Would be interesting to know how you get along with drone regs at home and on your travels. How you plan around any restrictions, how this can affect your creative choices. It was Phil Bloom btw I first got the shutter rule from for video funnily enough but this was for a DSLR .

Enjoying discovering your videos. I'm wondering if you have any advice about how to deal with bringing in say DJI Drone footage recorded at 30 fps etc using quick shots and then interpreting that for a 25 fps timeline? Blending footage really. Any tips? Love your approach. Sculpting light and getting good composition sure is the main thing.

hey Rashers! wow thank you for supporting the channel. It really does mean everything to hear that it’s helping. I love sharing what little I’ve learned. Dude it’s so frustrating!!!! DJI won’t put 24fps/25fps in quickshots! I read some chat rooms once and people are pissed. I agree. No excuse. They could easily do it in a firmware. I use quickshots frequently instead of active track modes. I got so frustrated with the inconsistency of my Mini 3 Pro active track modes that I gave up. Don’t use them anymore. I learned to use quickshots so it kinda looks like a tracking shot as the subject is moving in the screen. And quickshots is perfectly smooth everytime. No tips for you except to slow it down proportionally. Your video editing software should offer a conform option? What do you use?

Hello from Norway ! I have been a hobby photographer for more than 50 years ( still am ) , and can't agree more ... auto settings work just great in most cases. Began my hobby with Kodak instant cameras at the age of 10, have gone the grades with 135 mm and SLR Pentax cameras ( manual and semiauto models ) . For a few years I have been a drone pilot with my DJI Mavic Air2 and Air2S, and I always use auto settings... except in photo mode, wich I sometimes adjust exposure to get the effect that I prefer ... As you say, in auto you can focus about flying ! With my videos I prefer to edit light, saturation and contrast in my software... if needed 😀! Too many youtubers fill their screen with all kinds of stuff whichI mean is absolutely bullshit ! Auto settings and clean screen is my thing !

I like the idea of using an nd64 on auto, pure auto looks atrocious for me so will try that next time I fly. I prefer cinelike myself, I find all I need to do is eyedropper the white and drop a lut on top ( albeit dialled down as needed). Do you go full auto at night? I find full auto at night introduces tons of noise.

right on! thank you for watching. yup I’m a huge supporter of AUTO exposure in drones. In land cameras I always encourage manual exposure. But the dynamics of a flying camera are a different story. It makes AUTO exposure much more beneficial and allows the time to focus on and practice cinematography. Much more important.

Hello and thank you for your video. I just found your channel and really enjoy watching you. I've recently got a mini 3 pro, my second drone, and really love it. But I've noticed on my videos there is a stuttering of sorts or a pulse to the video. It almost looks like each pixel is running around to make the picture and about when the picture is normal looking it starts all over again. This is when say the drone is moving forward and the picture looks as if it's refreshing. Somewhat hard to explain without showing actual footage. But any help you or anyone could give would be most appreciated. Also I'm shooting in 4k 30, auto everything, I use freewell ND filters and I'm using the clearest, no tint, one. I use it more as a lens protector. And I'm usually out on cloudy days so not any bright sun. Thank you again for the work you do putting these videos up, liked and subscribed.

hello my friend! You say you’re recording in 30fps. Are you sure your editing timeline is set to 30fps? Are you getting the issue when you play the video straight from the drone? Can you send me a link to a video that has the issue? I’d love to help! We’ll figure this out.

One thing I like to use is a clear filter such as what I've been using on my Air 2. This is merely to protect the lens as prior to doing this I have had bugs get into the lens and it was no fun removing them. It's a whole lot easier to simply wipe a filter, which even if you should happen to damage it only costs a few bucks to replace. The reason I mentioned this is I'd like to ask you if you know of any clear or "night filters" that are available for the Mini 3 Pro? Living here in the south when I shoot night footage in the summer such as while filming our local city firework displays, that's when all the bugs come out and even an ND 4 filter prevents some of the needed light from reaching the sensor... I have even used these clear filters on cloudy days when I still want to protect the lens but still want all the light I can get to reach the sensor. On bright sunny days I will admit that I do use ND filters when I'm flying into the sun or when there's snow on the ground on bright sunny days... Yes, we do get snow here in the Carolina's.

Very solid information for video settings. How do these translate to still image settings? Most of the flights I take I am shooting both video and stills...so, I tend to have to change settings/filters quite a bit in order to get sharp images/video
