I like that you mentioned "knowing it's history". That's why I kept my 2000 Subaru Legacy Wagon until last year. I was the original owner, so I knew every detail of it's history. Even though I had to have the engine rebuilt for thousands of dollars one time, which cost a lot more than the car was even worth after it was fixed, it still felt better spent than trying to get an unknown used car for around the same cost.

My wife and currently own a 2012 Cayenne S hybrid premium package plus. We bought it at 120k miles for 20k it only had two owners and one was my father in law. We knew the history of the SUV so we felt comfortable purchasing with that mileage and it has been the best and one of the most reliable cars we have owned. It still had the Porsche CPO warranty for another year when we bought it. And we have put about 100k miles in the three years we have owned. We’ve really only had two surprise repairs so far a thermostat and vacuum lines and the check valve on the vacuum pump. The oil changes are so easy on these cars I do them myself but we have changed certain parts preemptively as to avoid surprise fixes down the road all in all in three it’s cost about 13k to maintain and fix, the most expensive being when we had to deal with the vacuum issues coming in at around 4500$ but got a entire new vacuum system and then fixed a lot of other things like coolent hoses that showed signs of age had slight cracking. And we had a button for window control break so we bought a new door console for it. We have coil overs instead of airbags so never worried there. All in all nothing else drives like it. Thought about trying Mercedes or Maserati but the Cayenne is just over all amazing drive. And not to much gone wrong at high mileage and still get 28mpg combined or 32-36mpg on highway depending on if it’s mountains or open road

My wife drove a 958 Cayenne for nearly 10 years. She loved it. Too bad you didn’t go for the diesel like we had, but TBH, the E Hybrid is great and you do get the updated PCM. We replaced her Cayenne with….another Cayenne. Lol. ‘23 E Hybrid. Loving it so far. Like you, we haven’t gotten rid of our old one. The ONLY reason I am considering getting rid of it is because if we do keep it, my son will be driving it. And that’s just not right for a 16 year old with a fresh license. Lol. Enjoy yours! The 958 is fantastic to drive!

There are some advantages to owning cars from the same brand. I own 3 cars from a single brand and have owned plenty of them previously. I've always been treated well at every dealership for this brand, built good relationships with parts people, and have been very pleased with how these cars drive and handle family and racecar duties. Sometimes, you just shouldn't change what you enjoy and is working well to begin with.

Your original Cayenne series inspired me to purchase my 2012 Cayenne S 2 years ago. We've had her for 2 years and 30k km, and it's been a dream to drive with no big issues. We were lucky to buy an example that had the transfer case replaced direct from Porsche at the beginning of our ownership, but I'm curious to see your experience with that. I hear the hybrid/diesel doesn't have the transfer case issues that the normal models do. They really are great cars with engineering magic to make it drive like it does.

I’ve been looking forward to this Cayenne “installment”. You gave me the confidence to buy a 2020 base last weekend! Got rid of a wrangler I’d owned for 10 years and 100k. Moving from jeep to Porsche is like moving from Piper cub to F-18. I’d prefer fewer bells and whistles, but they are fun to have as long as they are working well. Specifically chose a base over platinum to avoid a few more potential issues and to have 19” wheels. Having minimal sidewall on a truck that may see some rougher roads just makes zero sense. At least you have a spare! Audi removes them leaving the owner with the need for cell phone, Towing membership and prayer. Well done review. Thank you.

I remember in the early 80s when my high school friend's dad got a second gen Prelude, which my friend drove as much as the dad did. That row of buttons along the dash was so nice and actuated vents with just a press. It was a whole different world of luxury to me after years of big, ugly knobs that were stiff to turn, and felt gravely and imprecise. I ended up with my own later gen Acuras and Preludes, and my current F30 3 series still has the same basic, simple push button layout. I don't want screens, or at least more than I have already. If I needed to replace the BMW, I'd probably do like Todd and just try to get a new, better version of what I have, and mainly just for the buttons and lack of screens in general.
