Great video, but it looks like this upgrade is for a clean environment, I don't see other datastores and I'm sure you don't have VMs created. Are the steps the same with a production environment? Having VMs and datastore for them?

Only annoying part is vCenter install ISO is around 6GB, patches are also around 6GB... It's like re-installing vCenter...

I checked my vCetner Server Management for update but there is an error " Check the URL and try again". May I know what URL are you using for checking updates?

What about a vsan witness server. Is it updated first along with the other esxi hosts through lifecycle manager?

Sevendown, yes you can update these like any other ESXi host.

Thanks for the video. Do you recommend taking a snapshot of VCSA after shutting it down or without shutting down?

Michal, fortunately it usually shows some inordinate amount of time on the estimate but never takes that long.

On my first attempt update of vCenter appliance showed me 4 hours. Waited almost 1 hour and than canceled it. Maybe this is that king of job good to schedule it for a night.

Nice Video. As for your VM's on each host are they all shut down, I am assuming so? If not then you would do each host one at a time, migrating off all VM's to other hosts correct?
@VirtualizationHowto

MK that is correct. My lab cluster wasn't a great example of this since I didn't have any guest VMs running. However, with vLCM image-based remediation or with Update Manager, it rolls through the hosts, either automatically or manually (depending on how you choose), migrates running VMs off the host to other hosts in the cluster, places the host in maintenance mode, remediates, reboots, takes out of maintenance mode and repeats the process across all hosts in the cluster. You are right though, all running VMs must be evacuated from the host before it can proceed.

@@VirtualizationHowto Ok great so it will do that if you initiate an upgrade at the cluster level! It will take any running VM's and VMotion them to other hosts in that cluster while that host is being Upgraded. Does the VM migration happen before a host is put into Maintenance Mode once the Remediation is initiated or after?

What will happen if I have only 1 host running all my VMs + vShpere Center appliance ? 1. there is no second host to move VMs to, what will happen, will be there need to manually shutdown/suspend all my VMs before I start update, or there is need to turn on DRS service and VMs will get shutdown by DRS automatically in the right time ? 2. what will happen with vSphere Center's VM ? It controls the process of upgrade, but same time host needs to shut it down before host enters Maintenance mode.
