(aka carbide spiral/segmented cutter head) My jointers is a Delta X5 model 37-866x However, it is very similar to these models: 37-195, 37-190, 37-196, 37-275x, 52-858, 52-866x. There are only a few factories worldwide that produce most jointers for different manufacturers, so a lot of jointers are very similar to each other. So the methods I demonstrate here, will likely at least partially apply to your jointer. In fact, I was watching a video about upgrading a Ridgid brand jointer, as inspiration before starting this project. IF YOU HAVE A JOINTER and want to know if you can upgrade it, take a look at mywoodcutters.com -- They have a huge list of jointers and planers there, and if you find your model listed, then they have a replacement cutter head available. You can always email them to ask, they are very responsive. The actual replacement of the cutterhead took only about 2 hours, and that is with me stopping and filming. It is really pretty straightforward. The tuning took another 15-30 minutes. After owning it for almost two months: I love it, and wish I'd done this long ago.

Great video. Also a "I don't care. I don't want to!" Straight knife jointer t-shirt would be awesome! 😂

Thanks for the video I have been putting this off despite having the lux3 cutter head in its box. I have the exact jointer and I am going to do this tomorrow!

Hey, Art - I have a cheaper version of your jointer. It is a 6" Delta Shopmaster, so the basic build is the same but mine is not quite as nice. Since I bought it many years ago, I have hated using it. I never got a good quality cut and I lost track of how many hours I wasted fiddling with the knives only to be disappointed with the results. I'm finally in a position where I could buy a Lux Cut head. Today, I installed it with help from your video and Robert Dunn's. Both were a huge help for me -- especially yours because our jointers are very much alike. I got it all done, adjusted the outfeed table (yes -- my manual lied too!), and gave it a test. I jointed a piece of walnut, which used to give me chatter and a washboard cut. Now, it was perfect. Two passes with the Lux Cut and it was smooth as glass. I couldn't believe how good it looks. I can actually look forward to using my jointer again. I love your line about "Some people say adjust the knives... Now I don't have to." I agree! This was worth the hassle of changing it to get great results. Thanks for making this video and sharing it. It was so helpful and I really appreciate it!

It has been a while but I upgraded my Dewalt 735 planer to the LUX cutter head. Outstanding results and as you have mentioned very easy to rotate the carbide cutters. When I do get a jointer I will definitely be installing a LUX cutter head! Thank you for this great review!

I don't think you will regret it Art. I had a 6" PM jointer and a 15" PM planer with knives and always disliked them for the same reasons Upgraded to an 8" Grizzly jointer and a 20" Powermatic planer with helical heads and there is such a big difference in cut quality, even on gnarly grain and knots. And of course, no blade adjustments. Just rotate the cutters 90 degrees and they last forever.... if you stay away from nails, staples and the like. Thanks for show us the process. JimE

I put a Shelix head in my old Jet 6" jointer. It is so very much more user-friendly now - quieter and with greatly reduced vibration with the three straight knives gone. I had to be patient to determine how to get the jointer apart enough to do the replacement, but it was not too bad. My ancient Dewalt breadbox planer was worn out, so I shopped and decided on Makita as a replacement. A Shelix head was bought for it at the same time that I purchased the planer. It does use more power, so I take lighter passes when using it. The Makita is a winner, and the helical head makes it all the better. I spent a lot on the two Shelix heads, but they are used quite often. Prepping stock is just a lot more pleasant to do now. Worth every penny.

I followed your process to install a cutterhead in my Delta 37-196 6" jointer and it was spot on. The only issue is that my cutterhead is not parallel with the beds, and with the stock straight blades I adjusted this in the cutterhead to fix the problem. Anyone else run into this and have any ideas? Thanks for the video!

I would like to get one but it costs more than I paid for the Grizzly jointer 20 years ago.

when I take out the blades on my 6 inch jointer, sharpen, reinstall and tune up the height of each blade I am in the neighbourhood of 1-1.5 hours. So the upgrade certainly does not seem like a long time. Thanks for the video!

You should not have loosened the gib bolts. The bed moves with some tightness for a reason.

Great video. Any thoughts on the size of bearing puller\gear puller would work?

The gear is about 3-1/2" diameter, give or take a bit, so ?? Sorry, I don't have any experience with gear pullers beyond seeing some on YT videos
