I learned something. You can take a stock piston and use a spacer ring and use a much "thinner" ring! Amazing!

I don't know why more folks don't use them, it's so easy and it gets rid of a "flaw" that piston rings have had since the beginning of time.

@@MrTheHillfolkbiggest reason for me not trying them is they've been around since the 70's and if they are so great. How come I can't find any independent test that show gapless actually do what they say. Literally every video about gapless is ether from total seal or someone talking to a total seal rep. Really makes it feel like snake oil or at the very least really not worth the extra $150-400 for a set of piston rings.

@@nashvilleoutlaw Back around 2003 , I was building an engine for a project. It was a 98 Jetta TDI engine that I converted to mechanical injection for use in a 79 rabbit. Ditch the electronics and use an early fuel system for ease of installation. Turbo and whatnot ,30-40psi nothing major. Anyways , I was interested in the whole zero gap concept as I worked at an engine shop. Anyways,since the engine was "new" and only like 5-6yrs out there they had nothing on the shelf, and they requested if I could mail them some of the stock rings and see what they could come up with. They said they were very impressed with the OEM ring quality,not like thiers would be much better. Hmm,ok?? I was told if I could send them a set of new oem rings they could be modified for zero gap for 35$ a set. It's a 4 banger ,I got 5 sets because I was afraid of breaking one. That was a mess in itself ,I almost paid 120 a hole for the OEM rings until I found out Goetze makes them and I got them for like 40 a hole. Anyways,I had them modded for zero gap top rings and couldn't be happier. Leakdown test after 10k barely made the needle move ,and it was maybe double that at 30k. Alas ,I had another issue with the engine but upon the repairing process our shop collapsed 10yrs ago. The whole project is sitting in the corner and I refuse to give up yet ,I've had other projects in it's way but I'll put it back together with the same rings ,they looked fine. And I also had an open crank breather which without total seals you'd die at a light from the fumes even vented under the car at the back. I'm sold for life ,I'd throw em in a lawnmower if I ever had one opened up enough for ring replacement 🤣

I’m very interested in gas ported piston rings, just recently learned about them. I’m running a 6.0 iron block LS bored .030 over, with flat top pistons and 799 heads and a Borg Warner S475 10 psi. I broke the ring lands on piston #5. I talked with my machine shop and he says gas ported piston rings wear out the cylinder quicker. How true is this?? I only had 14k miles on this build. It was a set of hyperutectic“ stock “ material pistons.

Does gapless or gas ported ring going to create more power?
@TotalSeal

Yes, we have repeatedly seen increases in horsepower and torque when upgrading to either a gapless or gas ported ring. We’ve even seen some amazing results from gas ported gapless rings. They are quite the combo!
