I realised while editing this video, that I was supposed to use the 1Gb/s ports to go to the router, but forgot. I'll sort that out too.

Nice video and I like the idea of keeping old hardware; but 100mbit + power usage + fan noise + small latency increase means it would be a no go for me. Also do all the cameras going to the NVR use less than 100mbit? My single camera uses like ~10mbit, so multiple going into the NVR on 100mbit maybe an issue, I suppose you could use one of the 1gig uplink ports. Saying this VLANs + Rackmount + SNMP (I'm sure) is nice to have!

Mate... there's nothing wrong with that switch. Latency? 64 bytes from 192.168.1.252: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.288 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.252: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.275 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.252: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.847 ms As for the throughput, that port that goes to the NVR is only pushing a maximum of 25Mb/s downhill with the wind behind it. And SNMP?... of course! Here's that port. The gap was the outage time :) pasteboard.co/XUvYRRR1E4my.png

I usually ballpark $1/Watt/year. The old switch sounds like $100 a year, so a new poe switch would probably have a 2 year payback. Australia might not have the same economics.

8:34 would love a more in-depth explanation on this. I think I'm running into a similar issue, where my pfsense router is acting as a wireguard server for remoting into my network, and the same pfsense is acting as a wireguard client for communication between my home network and a VPS. Communicating from my LAN to and from my VPS works fine, but when trying to access the VPS through a wireguard client to my pfsense install it won't work.

Hey mate, thanks for showing us how to do this network stuff... Can you show us how to set up an Ad blocker + VPN that fixes it for all the wifi points in the house? So when a device is connected we don't get ads, or if I want to watch international stuff on my phone I can. My set up is a crappy telecom router that has wifi off and then feeds into a "famous search engines" mesh wifi, but other than that, I dunno what I should do to get what I'd like. Thanks man, I really enjoy your vids

Awesome video as always! I'm a little bit skeptical about not using Dahua's NVR as a switch for cameras. I have a very similar camera system, but my NVR also has a PoE-powered switch, so when I connect cameras directly, I'm able to discover and 'adopt' them. However, I really like the idea of recycling old networking equipment. We quickly moved from fast Ethernet to gigabit Ethernet, but many of our appliances don't even need that much bandwidth, like TVs and IoT gateways.

Indeed. 100Mb/s is still better than fine for so many scenarios, especially when they have a couple of 1000Mb/s ports up the top... which I meant to use to the router, and will go back and do.

I like zip ties (used them in the old days) but would use velcro today. And you absolutly must have the right cable for the right job. My main issues is where is the UPS now? I know it does not look nice in that rack, and I do value looks. But in some areas - function must win over esthetics.

Couldn't you plug the internet sfp directly into one of the 1G SFP ports? One VLAN routed to the router later and no more need for the tplink media converter. Of cause only if their network does not use 1Gbit symmetrical to the internet, but with two kids one might never know ;)
@TallPaulTech

Well, I originally got that modem to use in the SFP port of my switch at home. As I mentioned, I forgot he had it there when I was going over to throw this switch in. It wouldn't benefit anything anyway, because it would then have to come back out of the switch on the other gig port to the router. Then that's the 2 gig ports full for no real reason, leaving no gig port for the lan side of the router, which I meant to use and will go and sort out today.

Some folks cry that zip ties damage cables and that they are pain to cut out if a change is needed vs using Velcro straps.

May not be recommended by wiring regulations, particularly for CAT6 where Velcro is recommended. If they're done too tight may increase the resistance of the cables impacting performance.

Structured cabling of cat5/e or greater MUST use velcro to prevent deforming of the twist inside the cables. This standard has been around since 1996.
