The best thing about the sure SM series handheld mics, is how ridiculously many you can find for cheap on the used market. Don't buy a new SM48 if you can find a nice used SM58beta, which sounds really great. It doesn't sound entirely the same as an SM7 of course, but it's really comparable with the same dry dynamic mic character.

Everyone always grabs a snowball, then realizes you are just trying to mic your voice, not the entire room and neighbors dog. I personally prefer as little overlay as possible. Viewers really don't care about last follows and donations being on-screen constantly. I highly suggest streams make a simple slide show looping all their social links as a watermark so that if a clip goes viral people know where to find you. Beyond that a Starting, brb, and ending screen is about all the overlay most streams need.

A lot of phones run the internals from battery power only, so putting a big constant drain on the battery while also trying to keep the charge at full is a great way to make the battery pack swell up and break things or even ignite. Some alter their behaviour when connected to slow or rapid chargers too, with rapid chargers generally being the better bet to avoid battery killing action (counter to what should be done for battery longevity under normal phone use). It's all very poorly documented and model-specific information.

One thing for clarity's sake: the narrow pickup range of the dynamic mic is not a "bug" that is "more of a feature", it's just simply a feature. Dynamic microphones such as the SM58 used here are largely meant to be used in noisy environments where in order to retain clarity for the one who's speaking you need to pick up as little background noise as possible, therefore why the need to have your face pressed up to the mic (therefore the low volume despite high gain) and the need to be directly in front of it (no sound if you turn away). Considering the SM58 is one of the most commonly used stage microphones even for modern day artists, you definitely aren't missing out on reliable audio. If it's good enough for singing, it's good enough for streaming. But other than that the description of the differences between the microphones was to me very concise and clear, and great for anyone new to the whole thing to at least have a rough idea of what they need to get started.

If using a Sony Camera for streaming check if it is compatible with Sony Imaging Edge Webcam. The you only need to connect the cameras USB to your PC and i will show up as an webcam. No need for HDMI output and capture cards. And while I generally agree with aperture wide open for good bokeh, if we are talking about f 1.8 or something similar, setting the focus manually can lead to you being out of focus just by sitting up straight in your chair. Although that also depends on focal length and sensor size.

Other lighting solutions are available. You can look for LED video and photography lights from sites like Amazon, B&H, and Adorama. The Neewer lights will often be the cheapest, but the improvement in quality from going for something like a Godox or GVM will be noticeable for about 50-100 more in terms of longevity and ease of use.

I miss the days of low-$300ish dollar a5100s on ebay. Paired with $100-ish Sony 16mm F2.8 lens also from ebay, you would get a great streaming combo with a little bit of nice background blur. Nowadays, Canon EOS m200s are super competitive. Nowadays they can be had off ebay for $400-$500 with and without a kit lens.

Condenser microphones don't have wider frequency response because of their large diaphragms, they have it because they're condensers and work in a fundamentally different way. There are large diaphragm dynamics and small diaphragm condensers. The highest resolution condenser mics have smaller diaphragms, used in instrument recording, reference work, measurement work, etc. There are also tight cardioid condensers and loose cardioid dynamics so this categorisation of pros and cons is a bit of a generalisation. They will help with noisy sources but not reverb so keep that in mind. There is no substitue for acoustic treatment.

I've been in the music production business for more than 20 years and everyone serious enough about audio will tell you the same thing to stay away from that cheapo Behringer brand. If you are happy with your Behringer product then more power to you, but please dont fanboy-up them above their place in the audio world which is the rock-bottom. ;)

If you’re like to tinker (and have an Android device compatible with a usb type C dock), grab an Elgato CamLink 4K. You can use that to get a high quality capture of any gameplay. If the device supports using 2 cameras at once (usually limited to flagship phones), then you can use it as a facecam and gameplay capture device at the same time.

I would recommend going the Canon route for the camera; the T3 and T3i and above, and the PowerShot G5X Mark II, G7X Mark III, and SX70 HS are compatible with the Canon EOS Webcam Utility, which also removes the need for a capture card. Just hook up the camera directly to the PC via USB, and you'll get a clean output which can be selected as a webcam source.

@amadensor

@@cmdr-reflipd latency on an audio interface is important, but audio quality is so much more about the microphone. If the audio interface is affecting sounds quality anywhere near what the microphone is doing, that is the world's worst audio interface. I actually very much dislike the tone of the Midas preamps and a to d converters, but the microphone is still bigger.

@Cosmstack

@@cmdr-reflipd From my experience, that is just not true. There's not a second of latency, especially not when using an Asio4All driver. You can easily get it down to 10 ms. Are there better interfaces? Absolutely, but the behringer one is a very good bang for the buck version and the latency is fine. Also, most programs compensate for the latency. Usually latency only becomes an issue when monitoring

@SneakyFirefox5

@@snow1337 The built-in pop filter is something I'm new to, but it's saved me the trouble of frankensteining one onto it (like I've done for my previous mics). The adjustable sound profiles help whenever there is background noise that I want to tune out. I don't intend on getting a mic arm (since I've got a cosy little space for the mic to stand in between my consoles), but I've heard from some streamer friends that the mount adapter works well, and fits onto their arms as intended. The tap-to-mute thing is handy, though I've only ever had experience with clunky press-and-hold-to-mute microphones, so I can't really compare to others. Oh, and the RGB is a nice touch. When looking through the internal pop filter, I think I see 16 total LEDs. 8 on top, 8 on bottom. The only con I have with the RGB is the fact that since there's a pretty hefty gap between the top and bottom, there's a small area in the dead middle where the light is less bright. I found the fact that you have to plug in a Type-C into the back of the mic, as well as the Type-A into my PC, however, quite irritating. I wish the mic cable was simply built into the mic rather than having to be plugged in on both sides. I think that, unless you already have a really high-end microphone that offers most of the comforts the Quadcast S provides, that this is worth its price. I've been using it since January of this year, and it's been an invaluable upgrade from my previous JLab Talk mic. Overall: 8/10, would recommend. :)

An app I'd recommend personally for streaming using a mobile phone as a webcam is "Droidcam", involves downloading it both to your phone and PC, running it on both and connecting either via local IP to connect wirelessly so you can position the phone wherever- or even walk around your house for a wee tour, or connect via USB to PC and use it wired. Has ads on the mobile app if you don't pay the £5 or whatever it was, but the ads are just display on the phone, not on the camera feed (I personally paid for it because I like it). Can be assigned to a streaming program like any other webcam when running, probably worth a try for anyone wanting to give their mobile camera a spin (You really don't need to buy a dedicated camera. I was using a Logitech C920 before, but my £120 mobile provided me with a better quality camera) You can find loads of mobile phone stands with clamps to attach to a desk or monitor stand, so that you can slot your mobile into it and the one I have even has a wee ring light built on too- Talking maximum of £17 to get your phone set up on a flexible arm, with a diffused light and an app which supports up to 1080p, or roughly £5 if you just bought a mobile phone stand and used the app for free + no light.

Looking to maybe spend $40 on a dedicated keylight, but it was a MASSIVE upgrade from just ambient light. I show my colleagues (teaching) the difference between an unlit setup with my C920 vs lit, and the framerate, noise, everything gets infinitely better with a $40 investment.
