We packed up our young family and left Toronto for Germany 20 years ago. It was only supposed to be for two years but now the kids are in University here near Frankfurt. I wish I had had a channel like yours when I first started out. I had to navigate this place all on my own with only dial up internet. 😱 Danke und Viel Glück!

It's great to see someone as adventurous as myself. After living in LA for 20 years I needed a change. Long story short, my former company was in the process of completing a new facility in Australia, which then became my destination until one day when visiting a friend in Munich for the first time. While he was working, I did a lot of exploring, found myself in a small park when suddenly a loud voice in my head said 'I'm home.' Two years later I ended up in Wien, having shipped my things hook, line and sinker, no job, no place to stay, no visa, no nothing. Been in Austria for 32 years, never looking back. You folks have had a great adventure, congrats. LG aus Villach-Warmbad.

I NEED to say that YOUR VIDEOS ARE AWESOME!!! It’s absolutely impressing how much knowledge you put in every single video and how carefully you choose your words in order not to be biased, be it on the history of housing in Germany, the different eating habits, the traditions - you two do a fantastic job! And all this on top of your jobs, your family, living in a foreign country, the pandemic, German burocracy - so impressing how you manage to keep your good humour with all those challenges! I found your channel in search of information on Freiburg where my son is going to spend the next half year in order to finish his master, taking his bike with him, so I warmly recommended Jonathan’s video on riding through the black forest to him! I definitely love the idea of his seeing all the wonderful places you present in your videos! Take care of you 🧡

Watching this as I sit on the floor stuffing my life into two suitcases and pack up my fam to leave Canada for good! So inspiring thanks for sharing. Hi fellow Illinoisian! We are interested in possibly biking the Schwarzwald Radweg which kind-of-sort-of parallels the Westweg. We haven't done much exploring in the North Black Forest so I'm looking forward to seeing the sights around your area. And YES, we also experienced long lines at the Croatian border. I think the longest wait was at the Croatia/Bosnia and Herzegovina crossing trying to get down to Dubrovnik.

@@TypeAshton We live very close to the Schwanner Warte, a view point overlooking the Rhine valley. There are also nice restaurants with beer gardens. I did the bike trip from our house to the youth hostel in Forbach along the Westweg a few years ago with my son. It is not easy, without motor. I had fun, my son not so much. He ate two adult portions of Käse-Spätzle that evening in the restaurant. I guess he burnt some energy 😉 The part towards Pforzheim I would actually skip. It's not that interesting. Pforzheim is also not really the nicest city in the area. Let us know when you are in the area, maybe we can meet up. Greets, Ralf

Do you now also speak fluent Deutsch in the Schwarzwald ? Why do so many young Americans want to emigrate to Germany?

I wish I could say yes. Both Jonathan and I are B1. Our excuses (which admittedly aren't good excuses) are that Jonathan works in an all english-speaking office and with the pandemic what progress I was making speaking to my German academic colleagues was completely cut off. I hope to return to a working office in January and speaking everyday will make a huge impact on my confidence and grammar. I think Germany is a great place for young Americans. It offers a much nicer work/life balance than in the States. I recently read a poll that the newest generation of US workers are unlike the older generation in that they would rather make less money if it meant a better quality of life and time with family. It takes a lot of work to move abroad fully, but we think it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives.

They are both still snoozin' around the house. I think we need to have them make a debut in a future video again.

We actually have two dogs! Java, my running buddy, is 8 years old and Georgia, our old lady, is 11. 99% of the time they are either sun tanning on the balcony, snoring in their beds or waiting or Jack to drop snacks on the floor. 😉 But we will be sure to feature them in some upcoming videos. We didn't realize they would be so popular.
