A walk-through of our 13 year old urban ecological design project.
Last year we harvested $6000 worth of fruits, veggies, mushrooms, herbs, and medicine from our typically sized 50 x 100 foot urban property.
Fully integrated water harvesting system - including storage tanks (6400 liters) and in the soil itself.
Self-watering annual and perennial garden beds. We basically turned the whole front and back yards into giant wicking-beds.
Huge diversity of perennial and annual foods and medicines, integrated into self-fertilizing plant communities. An ecosystem has emerged; we participate in and learn from it.
Annual veggie garden in raised beds, each covered by a poly-tunnel. Each bed is separated by irrigation trenches covered by woodchip trails - that are innoculated with edible mushrooms!
It all amounts to an ecological design that allows overlapping blooms and edible bounty that starts at the last snow in the spring and lasts until the first snow of the fall, right outside the door.
And so much more...
