I am a pro at this. Parking in a residential area is a big NOT. Too many nosy people that know you don't belong there. Park and Ride lots are great. You can stay for days, just dont pull out your camping chair. 24 fitness for showers is a good one. Churches are another. Just ask the Paster. Wal-Mart sucks, too much traffic. Once stayed at the Police station. Nothing like hiding in plain sight. All Night Stores. (I'm here early for my shift) Get annual state/USFS park passes. Support the Military stickers. Cops don't like FUCKING with Vets. (I am one) I'd make a video but then I wouldn't be stealth would I. 😎

I park in residential spots all the time in Denver and don't have problems. However their curbs are not owned by the homeowners. Apartment places/hotels are usually the quickest if you are in town for blending in and sleeping. I like the idea of Churches, however I like the idea of blending in period. I have vet tags and cops both times let me off when my liscence happened to be suspended lol. I'm in a blacked out Honda Element.

Closest I've come to doing this is because I had to literally crawl out of a bar. Way too much to drink on a birthday. Decided to crash in the back of the jeep. Chicago cops woke me up and after I showed ID they wanted to ticket me for vagrancy. I pleaded (would say argued but there is no way it sounded like that) and he finally let me sleep it off for a few more hours.

I did this exact same thing in my 1982 Tacoma 4X4 about 35 years ago! I had a setup similar to yours. Just a camper shell. My bed was in two parts and I could make a 1/2 bed or a full bed across the back by sitting part of the bed on the shelving units I had. Had a Coleman stove, lantern, cookware, rain tarp that would cover a picnic table and clothes is about all. I took a year off with my girlfriend and toured most of the US. I did a lot of urban boondocking. Places near apartments were always good, no one noticed a strange vehicle. Back then, you could stay in rest stops without getting hassled. Stayed in a lot of National Forests and BLM land. Of course I stayed places I had to pay for, like in National Parks, but sometimes you could still find a free place there. My 4X4 took me a lot of places where nobody was at anyway, so staying was no problem! I had a book called something like "Where to Camp Free", which showed me a lot of great places. There are a couple of apps now that so the same thing. Best and most adventurous year of my life! I was around 28 years old then.

Enclose the reflective insulation in cloth as right now if a flashlight is aimed at the window it will reflect back out giving away that you are blacking out the window. Enclosing them also lets you make smaller sections with overlap of fabric flaps to block the light making them easier overall to install Can also make thicker insulation panels that are too heavy for velcro so can instead put eye hooks in to use bungee cords to hold them in place

Mo Rodents eat rubber, for f'in fun. I have 4 garage doors that have the rubber gaskets with the corners chewed out by mice and rats. If they smell food or sense warmth or a dryer spot, they will make it inside. They chewed 1/2" plywood in my storage trailers and I had to put steel plates in the corners to stop them. I had a rodent eat the speedometer cables out of a Jetta I left stored for a month in a storage unit. I threw a bag of mothballs in to clear them out, same with the trailer. Rubber may keep the water out but not a rodent in search of a new condo.

tj G Its better to get some small LED lights that aren't draining the vehicle battery. Something like a $100 portable power pack like a Yeti that has USB charge ports on it is handy. Only thing is, once that runs out, you gotta charge it at work or something if you plan to use it regularly.

A buddy of mine had the same problem. Eventually he just took out all the glass pane's of the cabs rear window. As well as the shells glass from its window. Then used contact cement to lay a 6" wide strip of 1" thick rubber (used for large-scale sealing of some form) One edge glued to the cab, the other to tye shell. Perfectly sealing the gap between the two so that he could crawl to either with ease. Eventually he added curtains to keep outsiders from peering in to see his little operation lol.

I started whitewater raft guiding during summers when I was in college and have stuck with it since. My college offered a guide-school program and that's how I got into it.

Nice! If velcro adhesive melts in the heat, use contact cement (Dap) on plain velcro. I converted my stock dome light to red nightlight and installed a much brighter LED strip for on-demand lighting.

Can someone explain why stealth camping is so dangerous? Why does it seem like it’s a scary thing to do?
@kapucyn7113

@forestgirl4071

Because it's often illegal. Regardless, if you are found out, police or security could become involved and you could be arrested or detained for a while. Also, I was stealth camping once on the street near apartments and a hotel and a homeless man who was shirtless from the nearby encampment tried to break into my minivan at 2 AM. He was not aware I was in the rear of the van sleeping.

Forest Girl Arrested for what?
@forestgirl4071
6 жыл бұрын
Because it is often illegal, depending on the municipal regulations. You also risk having someone knock on your door at 3 AM at night to kick you out or having the police come to detain for half an hour while they run checks, question you, etc. All a neighbor has to do is call the police and say there is a suspicious vehicle in the area or they want a wellness check to make sure you are not dead or sick or drunk. If a police car sees your car in an area where it is unusual, they will check you out.

Not so stealth, eh? That was Uvas reservoir, McKean to then to Harry rd, and left turn at the light onto Almaden expressway. Those construction guys in the lot at the light were working on a water pipeline to Santa Teresa water treatment plant. I would camp in my truck on water skiing trips, but that was a full size GMC. I cannot image doing it in a smaller taco.

on my last truck setup I had. i used accordion boot material. you take out the back cab window and the window of the topper and the material seals the 2 together. it made really easy to get from the cab into the truck bed. and it feels more open as well
