A comparison of the Japanese and American openings for Tatsunoko Productions' anime "Urikupen Kyūjotai". The series originally aired in Japan in 1974-75 as 5-minute daily episodes, forming a complete storyline each week. In 1991, Saban Entertainment licensed it and did a completely re-edited, English-language version titled "Jungle Tales", consisting of 22 half-hour episodes (not 26 as Wikipedia claims). The Sabanized version got dubbed releases in many countries during the 90s and early 2000s, perhaps most prominently on the Fox Kids cable channels. It even got video releases in some countries in the 90s, including my home country Norway - which to my knowledge has never happened in Japan. Well, Norway was always a country of culture.
When it comes to the Japanese OP here, I at least THINK this is the original intro sequence aired on Japanese television back in the 70s. It's surprisingly short, but this might make some sense considering the Japanese episodes were only 5 minutes long. What surprises me more, though, is that the OP has even made its way online. It was completely unfindable back when I uploaded some Norwegian-dubbed episodes from a "Jungelpatruljen" VHS a decade ago. I don't know who first shared it on the internet, but it's been around for a few years by this point. Seemingly, it's sourced from a 2011 DVD set titled "水木一郎 TV主題歌大全集 (Ichiro Mizuki TV Theme song Collection)", which contains a complete collection of TV openings and endings sung by Ichiro Mizuki. As we can see in a disc guide on tower.jp - tower.jp/item/2956773 - Urikupen Kyūjotai is included as track 23 on DVD 1 of the set, under the name "がんばれ!ウリクペン救助隊" (= "Ganbare! Urikupen Kyūjotai", the title of the Japanese opening theme). This 2013 blog post also mentions that the Ichiro Mizuki DVD is the first time ANY footage from Urikupen Kyūjotai has seen a commercial video release in Japan: shira713.blog.fc2.com/blog-en...
My copy of the Japanese intro in this video is sourced from a Twitter posting by 昭和アニソンbot (@animesongbot_1) dated October 28, 2019: twitter.com/animesongbot_1/st... That probably wasn't the first upload of it online, though: an extract of the OP was shared already on September 19, 2019 by the Twitter user わとそん (@doctoruwatson): twitter.com/doctoruwatson/sta... After that, it's been posted on KZitem a few times. However, the 2019 Twitter posting by @animesongbot_1 - an account whose name and description make it very clear the video originally came from elsewhere - has the nicest quality of all the uploads I've seen so far. (The same bot channel has also reposted the intro several times since, always in the exact same quality and with the same text presentation.)
The English intro sequence is taken from a Finnish VHS release titled "Metsäpartio 1", which got uploaded to KZitem a while back: • Metsäpartio (1991, puh... You can see its cover art here: www.videospace.fi/release/met... Unlike the Norwegian and Swedish VHS releases, the Finnish edition simply used Saban's English theme song instead of dubbing it. This version has better video quality than the Russian TV broadcast I posted years ago, and is also free of a local voiceover on the title card. (Here's the Russian airing if you wanna compare: • Jungelpatruljen (Jungl... )
