Alesechka, querida.

As an accomplished multilinguist, you are aware of how difficult it is to capture the essential meaning along with specific wording when performing translations. Translating from a translation rather than from the original Kichwa text doubles the risk that something important gets "lost in translation."

Well... yeah... it's quite a quest to weave together Sense and Sensibility! I do my best to stick as close as possible to the meaning (for the students, too - to learn words, even phrases) - and at the same time, to keep the feeling alive! Kichwa language is very sentimental, and so are Kichwa people, and it's a great merit in our "think, think, think" globalized world. I am not perfect, of course, but I am trying my best. By the way, in this particular song, both original text - Kichwa and Spanish - are written by the author, tayta Kaya Cachimuel. The link to the original video is in the Description ("More...")

@@aleskakichwa I very much appreciate your efforts and the very hard work you are putting into these translations. I know from my own relatively limited experience that translations from one language into another usually have very similar meanings, but often can be so loose that we may not be faithfully translating the original text into the third language when relying on a translation. I see in several videos here on your channel that your English translations usually match the Spanish translation better than the original Kichwa. Still, well done and very ambitious! Here's a little story you might enjoy. A few years ago, I went to a runa cultural education and ceremonial center in Agato (Otavalo). A mutual friend told me they had a special space for rent that was perfect for me. (I loved it and I'm still living here.) I sealed the deal with the landlords, then began to walk down to the bus to Otavalo. I noticed that a close friend of the family was leaving at the same to drive into Otavalo. I asked her for a ride into town. We chatted for awhile when I asked her what kind of work she does. "I'm a musician," she told me. "With what band?" I asked. "Yarina," she replied. I then asked in all innocence, "Did you know there is another really famous band that uses that same name?" Ana Cachimuel smiled at me indulgently. "We are that band. We are Yarina."
@aleskakichwa

@mamaurku Wow, that was a wonderful surprise about Yarina! Nice story! As for the translations... thanks for your appreciation. Here are some details.... Truth be told, I don’t feel confident enough to translate directly from Kichwa to other languages. I simply don't have enough experience nor practice (7 hours time difference is a killer for online classes, i couldn't continue them). Since I am not sure enough about the subtleties, I rely on my Native colleagues' help. I usually make a draft Kichwa - Spanish translation (and/or back, like in the recent Warmiku case) - and then have to wait for their revision that can take up to a few days. Everyone has their own life, projects, jobs, etc. I can't ask for more, really. The whole process of mounting the video with a suitable picture, letters, background, stickers, etcetera takes about a week. My purpose is not to give a perfect translation but rather to reach non- Spanish speaking admirers of Kichwa language and music so that they would know, at the very least, what the song is about. Some are so eager that they type - manually! - the Spanish text from available (not mine) subtitled videos into an automatic translator, like Google, and hope it makes Some sense... As far as I know, my channel is one of a very few on KZitem that offers several languages. And of course, you can make your own translations. Why not? Thinking back... once upon a time I asked you for help with straight Kichwa - English translation. It was just a phrase or two, not a lot. But you told me off because I was not a paying student. So... what was I supposed to do? Well, that what I am doing now - to translate what, and as, I can on my own (with some help from the Natives). Thanks for your opinion and appreciation anyway.
