Before I received my Ursa Major SST-206 in the mail, I wasn't sure how I would hook it up, since it only has AES in/out. Searching the internet, they used to recommend getting a standalone A/D and D/A converter like the MIDIMAN Flying Cow. That will translate 1/4" auxiliary sends from a mixer into AES going into the Space Station, then out of the Space Station digitally AES and back to 1/4" for my effects return on the mixer.
That piqued my curiosity, since the Flying Cow has 48kHz, 44.1kHz, and 32kHz... what if you forced the lower sample rate? Would it change the sound?
Answer: yes! It slows the Ursa Majors clock down 72.5% and what comes out is pure magic to my ears-- if your version of magic is lower fidelity reverbs and echos, that is! Instantly get grainy reverbs, slowed down echo repeats, and a musical quality that older boxes possess.
Here I demonstrate a few sounds through this new lower fidelity, remembering the Space Station has "hi fidelity" and "low fidelity" algorithms in it. If you listen to it, you can hear the nature of the slower effects.
Note: parameters on the SST-206 are also widened by a percentage for longer delays and longer reverb tails.
What do you think? Do these forced settings sound good to you?
