Hello fellow crocheters. I discovered how to avoid big gaps at the thumb juncture when starting the upper part of the mitt. Go to 30:16 on the video. We have just picked up the yarn of the outside colour. Insert the hook into the top loop of the first stitch as usual. Then, instead of going into the corresponding bottom loop as shown on the video, insert the hook into the next loop to your right ( of the thumb base) and finish stitch. Continue as usual from second stitch on to the last stitch of the row(30:53) where we'll do the same the opposite way: instead of going into the corresponding bottom loop as shown, insert the hook into the loop to your left and finish stitch. Good luck with it!

@@ursulagraf4068 I find myself stuck! after the color change, at 4:00, you do that first row with the new colors I have no problem. But starting the next row, and it is at 10:00 in the video to 11:53, you are inserting your hook into the new color stitch, then reaching down to the second place, and I cant tell how you find that stitch because the first color, and the outside, you used one side of the chain to single crochet back 37 stitches. Then you use the second side of the chain stitch to insert your hook into while doing the first round of double density stitches. I am good up to that point. So, then I go back to the first abandoned loop, insert my hook into the first stitch of the new color, and the previous round, now...... where does my hook go into to? You are going into the first, or outside color, but I dont have any stitches on either side to pick up. I wish I could show you a picture. If you can possibly help, I would be so appreciative.
@ursulagraf4068
5 жыл бұрын
@@wam0357 I don't think I quite understand your problem. It seems that perhaps you are inserting the hook into the full stitch rather than the back loop only before picking up the loop down below., that would account for not finding any loops to go into in the following row..

thank you so much I double checked that, but I believe my problem was solved after my late night attempt. I changed one color so that it was a stronger contrast, and now I see better the lower loop. Hope I can continue now. God Bless.

I’m very bad at reading written crochet patterns ‘tho so I am tempted to connect it to the tv so I have you on a much bigger screen so I can see what you’re doing, especially in the beginning. I’ve made pot holders using 100% cotton yarn and they’re perfect. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. With the oven mitt tutorial I showed you most 'tricks of the trade' for this stitch, so to open the door to endless other designs that you can develop yourself, like potholders, coasters, egg warmers, cozies, hats, bathmats, even slippers. Try it, it's an exciting challenge . I am really happy that my video is so successful and I hope that younger people will build on it. There is no limit to what can be done with this stitch.

After many repeat viewings of this video for tutorial purposes, I practically know this video word for word. I have successfully completed 4 oven mitts and decided to start a Facebook group where a crocheter can go to ask questions, and complete their own oven mitts. She is right, they are practical. She is also right about them taking a bit of instruction to understand the double density stitch. May I have permission somehow, to head up the facebook page for these instrictions? I would call it The Double Density Oven Mitt if that would be alright.

I opted to not turn the thumb inside out to finish. It's too stiff for me. So I cut my yarn about 12 inches and sewed the tip together with the outside color. Then just weaved the inside color into the sides of the thumb as best I could. Then I pushed the needle down into the middle, back up through close to the tip, and snipped it. It should stayed put. I'm keeping this one, so I will knownif it comes loose.

@ursulagraf4068

Thank you for your kind words - and no, acrylic yarns do not lend themselves well for oven mitts, or potholders for that matter. While cotton yarns will catch fire when getting in contact with an open flame - so be careful with gas -, acrylic yarns will melt with hot temperatures and could burn your hands badly. (Also, acrylic yarns are really bad for the environment in general).

Sotty, there is no written pattern. It is relatively easy to invent a new design such as these oven mitts, but it is quite another matter to write the pattern for it in black and white in such way that it is understandable to the user without countless questions popping up, because it is such an unusual stitch. I hope some day somebody will have the knowhow to do it. Until then following my tutorial is still your best bet. You can take notes while doing it which may eventually enable you to crochet the oven mitts without the help of the tutorial and - who knows - to come up with a written pattern that also other crocheters will be able to follow ??????!
