F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters from the 480th Fighter Squadron, nicknamed the "Warhawks," of the U.S. Air Force are actively involved in joint exercises with the Portuguese Air Force and NATO. One of these significant training events is "Real Thaw," an annual multinational exercise held in Portugal, aiming to enhance interoperability and readiness among the participating NATO allies. The exercises cover a wide range of tactical training scenarios, including air-to-air and air-to-ground operations, tactical air transport, close air support, special operations aviation, and medical evacuation.
During these exercises, the 480th Fighter Squadron operates alongside the Portuguese Air Force to perform complex training missions. These missions not only test the combat readiness of the participating units but also strengthen the operational coordination and partnership between the U.S. Air Force and its NATO allies. The integration of various aircraft, such as the KC-135 Stratotanker from the 100th Air Refueling Wing, further supports these operations by providing essential aerial refueling capabilities, thereby extending the reach and effectiveness of the deployed fighter jets.
