Can you imagine what kind of Hell would break loose if a USAF officer revealed what kind of toppings they were ordering on an unencrypted cell signal? You want to tell the Kremlin how to make a Chicago deep dish while you're at it?

It may be the signal traveling the world one time. Sometimes in amateur radio, I could hear the echo from my signal, and echoes on other amateur signals, depending on frequency and conditions. And in the late 60s, there was a Voice of America station (running very high power) in Bethany Ohio that operated on about 21.48 MHz. Although the main signal was skipping over me, in the morning I could hear multiple echoes on it. What was neat was that I could also hear meteors coming down and reflecting the signal, causing a doppler shift. Sometimes a big meteor would come down, and the signal strength would peg my S meter for a second or two.

@@jimmadsen1219 Very cool! I also have a ticket. If you are within 1000mi of Toronto, you can hear meteor scatter on 55.240 USB. I don't think it is long path because the echo is just as strong as the primary. We are hearing Woodland Hills, CA. There are many stations and they are running serious power. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Frequency_Global_Communications_System

@@wingman4668 Yes and no. EAMs are one-time pad encoded, so there’s no security risk in broadcasting in the clear, since it’s mathematically unbreakable. For any weapons system that requires a manually-entered PAL unlock code, those codes will be on site, and the EAM will decode to a particular action plan that will contain the actual code that gets entered into the PAL.

No, this message was for a particular unit. When I was on Titan II launch crew, they would always list the unit in the clear (Example: For the 381st Strategic Missile Wing...For the 381st Strategic Missile Wing...then the message.) At the end of the message SAC Headquarters would always say "Acknowledge Now" and all the sites would acknowledge receipt of the message. We would also get this on the 465L and 487 SLFCS systems on site
