I was on the Enterprise during the Vietnam war. I watched this happen a couple or five times. Those men were given medals for merely doing their job. Part of carrier flight-operations is not letting your plane hit the water if the trap is missed. These aviators were just doing their job properly. One thing that is SOP is to run the engines up to full power just in case this happens.

This is not the same military it was when we served. I served from 1970 til 1991 . And have been told by many its not the same . They are good people in the military dont get me wrong. Ive been told the disciplined isnt there . Ive read articles that Commanders are asking that the military go back to old style boot camp like c WWII or during the Vietnam War days. Recruits are showing up at post or bases feeling you owe them something. They come dressed for duty like they slept in there uniform . Let me say this if thats true , I as an NCO wouldn't let that happen but once the day they showed up looking that way. It wouldn't happen again. But today you can't discipline them Horsley. In my opinion , the draft needs to be brought back and every 18 year old male and female would serve 2 years active duty and 2 years reserve. And if you dodge the draft unlike President Carter when he come into the oval office he pardon them that were in Canada. You should go to jail 2 for 1 if you dont serve. This country is worth protecting and we all need to serve to protect it.

@@donwat91 I started in March, 1970. I got out in '74. We got told the same thing. It ain't what it used to be. There were many things like what you describe that prompted me to not be career oriented. Think....'angry young man'! I do not live up to my own level of intelligence when I make decisions while angry. That is why I TURNED DOWN THREE OFFERS OF the U. S. Naval Academy. Really bad decision! Gotta admit, when I set aside the bad memories, it WAS an adventure. I watched F4 Phantoms launch without catapult assist on a number of occasions. The Phantoms were built about 3 miles from where I grew up. That was really something to see. I watched an A5 Vigilante drop a spare fuel-tank upon launch. Being the Enterprise, GQ was called. I didn't bother. I was on the 0-11 level and my GQ station was on the 2nd deck port midship. The fire crew had the fire out in less than 20 seconds. It might have been sabotage or someone forgot to tighten something. I believe sabotage. A couple of purple-shirts were operating equipment in one of my shaft-alleys. They attempted to sabotage one of the propellor-shaft bearings. I think NCIS(?) was the investigator. When I was interviewed, the look on the investigators face was beyond priceless! I told him, in no uncertain terms that my guys didn't do it. Had they been guilty, they would have succeeded. These morons merely threw nuts and bolts in. They fall into the sump....end of story. I told him I don't want anybody in my crew that DID NOT KNOW HOW TO BREAK SOMETHING! I'm pretty sure that he immediately went to the Engineering Officer. I never heard another word except the two lads were thrown out of the Navy. I wish I knew how the Engineer responded. He probably laughed because I was correct.

“Back in my day” sailors are some of the most annoying people on this earth. These kids today can outperform you tenfold and are well trained and well-versed in their duties. Stop discounting them because the times have changed in every branch. I also hate how you’re upset that they were given medals for “just doing their job.” I implore you to look up any Medal of Honor citation and tell me that those people weren’t “just doing their job.” It’s not a matter of just that. It’s a matter of doing your job well and possibly saving lives. You haven’t the slightest idea how hard it is to save a 50000+ lb airplane falling off the side of a carrier in 90 feet. So please, collect your benefits and shut the fuck up about today’s military.

@@TylerM2112 Newsflash genius! You don't know what the Hell you are spewing about. Most medals are given for going beyond ones duties. Giving medals for merely performing their job is the same as a fucking participation trophy! It is meaningless. On those occasions where I got outside, I did see the wires get missed and the and the aircraft continued on for another attempt! On those occasions where I saw F4's launch without using the catapults, the same thing happened occasionally. The flight deck of the Enterprise was 75ft. above the water. When this happened, they got rather close to the water......I could not see the plane from my perspective on O-11 level. Three years on that boat and no one flew. Into the water in this fashion. The planes that did fly into the water usually did so because the pilots could not distinguish the starry reflections from the actual stars. BTW...., you weren't there. You know nothing of my training or performance. You seem to be rather impressed with yourself. Claiming that the F15s gun can fire 6000 rounds per minute is ludicrously misleading. If it can fire at the rate of 6000 rounds per minute, that is an entirely different matter. Its a big chunk of plane, but where would it store all those 6000 rounds of ammo and its associated loading belts and transport. The nose already accommodates a Hughs radar and other ancillaries, and 6000 rounds of ammo would be so heavy that the c of g would be critically altered if it was carried there . Time to end all the bullshot rounds per min numbers, and state rounds per second and seconds available firing. Since the plane loads fewer than 1000 rounds of 20mm ammo that's somewhat less than six seconds worth. Even that meagre supply will weigh in excess of 200 pounds, assuming that the Vulcan cannon ammo weghs in at about3.5 ounces per round. 20mm ammo can weigh a little over 5 ounces per round which would likely raise the ammo load weight considerably. So, it would be nearer the truth to state that the Vulcan cannon has about 6 seconds of ammunition.

Those aircraft on the aircraft carriers are among the best in the world and can destroy their targets on land and in the air and the enemies are scared of them and their firepower. Nope, navy pilots don‘t use autopilot for carrier landings- they would‘t trust the computer

yes, they keep at the engines at full throttle, but that’s the case when the aircraft misses the cable this time, E-2 catched the cable, slowed down, and the cable snapped, remaining with barely enough speed or no margin at all but luckily, with the engines at full power, the aircraft could accelerate and didn’t splash into the water

@@bernhardwolf6172 Incorrect. Some traps are in fact flown in auto-land mode.
