Much of this training regimen derives from 2 sources in Latvian history and culture. In ancient and medieval times, various pagan tribes occupied the forests and when they were at war, they employed guerilla warfare and hit and run tactics as more numerically superior and better armed enemies would try to lure them into open field combat where they could easily lose. Then after the Soviet Occupation, thousands of Latvians as well as other Balts went into the forests to engage in guerilla warfare against the communists. They were called the Forest Brothers. There are a couple of documentaries on them on KZitem. They used their knowledge of the terrain to carry out successful raids, which they were able to do for ten years after the end of WWII. They had to survive in the forests, dug hidden bunkers and tunnels where they lived and often died. The Soviets hid this from the world. The modern Latvian as well as the other Baltic forces have incorporated the tactics and methods of the Forest Brothers into their training.

A friend of mine actually passed this. The physical aspect get's tailored to each applicant, the idea is that physical fitness can be sorted out later, but with mental fortitude what you got, is what you got. Also, everyone get's asked what they are afraid of. Worst thing to say is nothing, as all challenges will become harder until the instructors find your phobia. The main challenge is called Hell. There is a visitation day in the middle where family can come to support them. This is very important as it truly gives them the mental strength to carry on.

Latvia have a proud fighting tradition.On the Eastern Front 1941-45 they had more Knight Cross holders then any other non-German unit.Captain Miervaldis Adamsons is the most famous one.During the Cold War the Latvian Anti-Communist Resistance Movement,the so called "Forest Brothers" fought a furious guerilla war against the Soviet Union.They lived in underground bunkers deep into the Latvian forest.Many of them were veterans from the battle of Velikaya River 1944,the battle of Kurzeme 1944-45 etc.etc.

Small detail - Baltic countries were not formed after Soviet collapse in 90ties. The countries have existed as far as almost a millenia back
@BIOSHOCKFOXX
27 күн бұрын
Actually Baltic States were called or formed after the collapse. After WW1 Baltic States were called all the countries by the Baltic Sea after the fall of Russian Empire, which were Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland, later Finland grouped with Nordics, Scandinavians. Baltics as such were formed after 1991, but each country was formed before that. All countries in the same year, but with quite some months in between. Latvia regained independence near the end of that year, last one from all three. With Lithuanian origins the story is interesting, as they were already existing in 18-19th century, but the territories were different of course. Latvians did exist, but in a different way, nation or country as such wasn't that defined with borders. Similarly with Estonians.

My grandmother's brother was helping Latvian Forest Brothers with food and supplies although he was very young. He got caught by NKVD and sent in Siberia for that. @TheNaleCookies Very similar story for my grandma and her best friend, a famous poet here. Most of my grandparents and their families were sent to Siberia, either charged and imprisoned or just deported to rural far east. Although grandma wasn't caught helping Forest-Brothers, she helped with the underground periodical "Kurbads", for which she got a 10 year sentence of hard labour and were physically destroyed by the end. Her best friend was the one who really were found out about feeding the Forest Brothers and she got 25 years respectively for it. Death of Stalin saved her, and as she was arrested and sent to gulag 5 years later than my grandma, abolition came right at the end of my grandma's sentence and they were both released from prison (the poet friend only serving 5 years and keeping more of her health intact). They were even allowed to return to Latvia after 1958, just to find out it had happened by mistake and they had to hide for years from Soviet authorities. Hardest was, she was in the last months of pregnancy with my mum and didn't have official residence, which my granfather (they met in Siberia) somehow sorted out. Despite having multiple strokes and paralysis during '80s, my grandma survived until 1991, just to see her enemy-state collapse and the poetic restauration of our independence. I wrote a few songs wit her friend's lyrics too.

Basic military recruit training at Fort Magsaysay of the Philippine Army training command, is a 6 months and starts at 3:15 early morning til taps at 10:00 PM. Any US soldiers who participated in the annual Balikatan Exercise is familiar of Fort Magsaysay. Philippine soldiery training is more physical, brutal and survival of the fittest. Food is not enough, recruits are undernourish. But when soldiers are deployed after graduation across the archipelago, soldiers do survive in all types of terrain even without being resupplied. The mountains had plenty of edible plants, crops and wilds animals to subsists.
