I have acquired a large assortment of proof sets through the years, I recently called my coin shop to get info. on my regular proof sets only to find out there is no market for them. therefore they were not interested. I'm only going to collect silver proofs from now on.

I'm running out of room in my safe and my coin dealer won't give me anything for any coin that doesn't have silver or isn't very rare. I need room for new silver eagles so I'm about to break up my regular proof and uncirculated sets and spend them (after looking at a few individual coins). I will chalk it up as a lesson learned.

Starting in 2019, all US Silver coins are .999, including commemoratives and the Silver proof sets.

Yes, that is correct

Yes. Mainly as a cost saving measure, since 99.9% silver is a more common and readily available alloy than the old 90% silver/10% copper alloy (which became less in use, so it often had to be custom made for the Mint), and since nearly pure silver is softer than 90% silver, the dies that mint it last longer (can mint more coins with a set of dies before they wear out and need to be replaced).

All the 2012 sets uncirculated, proof and silver proof had historically low production, so their prices are considerably higher in the secondary market. Typically I would have purchased them directly from the mint and wouldn't have had to worry about the secondary market, but since I was in Brazil that whole year I was unable to do so.

The 2012 proof set was annoying to acquire. I had things going on in my life at the time, so I did not acquire one directly from the mint. I learned my lesson.

Fun to collect... When I started collecting I put together a full range set of all but the 1936-1942 including all of the silver sets in OGP. The reason I haven't collected the early sets is twofold, price and they are hard to find in OGP. Price I can deal with but I have to have them in OGP and they just aren't out there at a price i'm willing to pay. Have fun collecting them and keep us up to date on your collecting habits as it will be cool to see how they change over time.

Thanks! I agree on the older sets. My plans right now are to go back to about 1957 with the proof and mint sets because that's when they start to get more expensive. I didn't know about that issue with getting older sets in OGP, but I'm agree it is a must. I haven't yet started to purchase any prestige or primer sets- what are your thoughts on those?

I like it... as long as they don’t start doing it every year. I think it will be a fun set to have in a collection because it is visually different where as for example the proof sets and silver proof sets are going to look identical if your showing it to a friend. I’ll be looking to pick one up.

generally speaking the mint switched colors periodically. Also ever since they started making the silver proof sets in 1992 they packaging for the silver ones is a different color than the non-silver.

If I pull a nickel with full steps from say, a 1962 or 1964 Philadelphia set (i.e., those paper envelope sets), is it still as valuable as pulling a full steps nickel from a BU roll, or does the fact that it came from a Philadelphia mint set, make it common for it to feature the full steps?
@CoinMetallurgist

That is an excellent question. I don’t know the answer. I’ll do some research and let you know if I can find out.

Coin Metallurgist ~ Thanks for your reply. After doing some more digging, I think the answer lies within the first minute or two of your video. As you demonstrate, even though the early 60's Philadelphia flat pack mint sets are not cameo at all, the coins are still way more shiny and brilliant, with mirror-like fields and surfaces, in comparison to coins meant for circulation or 'business strikes.' Therefore, while the flat pack Philadelphia proof coins would certainly grade very high and the nickels from these sets would be an easy place to find the Jefferson nickels with the full steps on Monticello, it appears they would not be highly-prized, as the full steps would be common on the proofs, whereas the full steps on the business strikes would be the rare and valuable pieces, as they were not struck on the highly polished dies, as were the nickels from the flat pack Philly sets. In fact, the very reason the full step nickels are so hard to find in business strikes, is because the business strike dies from the 60's and 70's were very neglected. At least I think this is accurate. If anyone has thing to add, please chime in. 😎
@mackstack4901

They are the same business strike coin. Most Mint state full step nickels have been cut out of mint sets.
@PureBlood42

@@mackstack4901 - Interesting. I'm more a penny collector, don't know much about nickels. I went to a public antiques mall and bought 2 or 3 of the cello packs from the 60's because I'd heard the full step nickels were valuable. But when I got home I started thinking the perfect full step nickels in the sets were probably not worth anything since they weren't regular business strikes, so I put the sets away in my closet. Maybe I should dig them out, huh?

in a case like this where a proof set's secondary market value barely surpasses the face value of the coins, is it logical to send the proofs in to a grading service and slab them or just leave them as they are in their sets?
