U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday said Israel and its warring rival, Hamas, should continue working towards “getting to the cease-fire” in Gaza, despite the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the Palestinian militant group’s leader who was killed in Iran.
Blinken, who addressed media during a trip to Singapore, refused to speculate on how Haniyeh’s death would impact growing tensions in the Middle East. However, he emphasized that Washington was not involved in the assassination of the Hamas leader.
While Blinken called for peace, Hamas’ armed wing said in a statement that the death of the leader would "take the battle to new dimensions and have major repercussions," while Iran declared three days of national mourning and vowed to retaliate.
Israel is yet to comment nor claim responsibility of the attack. Tel Aviv’s military says it is assessing the situation.
