A day after the balloons dropped at the Democratic Convention, support for President Clinton is rising, with an A-B-C poll putting him 20 points ahead of Republican nominee Bob Dole.
At the start of a bus tour through three U-S states, the U-S President and Vice President Al Gore addressed crowds in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and Cairo, Illinois.
Once again, Clinton stressed the importance of bringing the United States into the 21st Century.
In public at least, President Clinton appears unworried by having lost key political adviser Dick Morris amid the scandal of Morris' alleged affair with a prostitute.
He'd campaigned his way by train to the Democrat Convention to accept his party's nomination for president, then it was into a plane and onto a bus.
Clinton, First Lady Hillary Clinton, and Vice President Al Gore with his wife Tipper appeared relaxed and confident when they paused for photographs before boarding the bus.
They had reason to be in good spirits: an A-B-C poll setting Clinton 20-points ahead of Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole.
The survey registered votes found 54 percent planning to vote for Clinton, compared to the 34 percent planning to vote for Dole.
Only eight percent intended to vote for Reform Party presidential candidate Ross Perot.
Half of the interviews were conducted after the news broke about Dick Morris' resignation and alleged affair.
In Cape Girardeau, Missouri, a huge crowd of supporters gathered to greet the presidential bus.
First Lady Hillary Clinton told those gathered, being in Missouri was like visiting old friends.
SOUNDBITE:
"It's especially exciting for Bill, Chelsea and I to be here because we have spent so much time in your near neighbouring area of north east Arkansas. We have lots of friends in this area. Thank you for coming our to see us. We're very very happy to be here."
SUPER CAPTION: Hillary Rodham Clinton, First Lady
While the vice president was obviously confident of another win at the polls.
SOUNDBITE:
"You can wake up the morning of November 6th just feeling great. The sun shining through the window. fresh cut flowers beside the bed. The aroma of fresh brewed coffee coming in from the kitchen... tickling your nostrils. Your favourite music on the radio... the Macarena. Tripping the light fantastic, you go to the door and fling it open with a flourish. You pick up the newspaper and it says 'Clinton/Gore win in 96'. Ladies and gentlemen, here is the man for the future. President Bill Clinton."
SUPER CAPTION: Al Gore, U-S Vice President
Next it was the president's turn.
He continued his convention theme of building a bridge to the 21st century.
SOUNDBITE:
"We left Chicago on a bus to get back on the roads that we drove in 1992 because Hillary and I and Al and Tipper, we want to see the face of America, and we want you to know that we're going to build a bridge to the 21st century that all of you can walk across, with your families, with your children, and with your neighbours."
SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President
The 15-bus caravan will carrying the president, the vice president and their wives on a tour of four states in two days.
Audience appreciation levels at stop number one were high.
VOXPOPS:
"I think these people in this particular area find the president very credible, particularly because he's focused on family issues, particularly on issues concerning education."
"I think he has a good plan for balancing the budget and protecting the people that need protecting."
