I came to Australia in November 2019, as a self-funded retiree. I became an Australian Citizen in January 2021, because I had sufficient funs as to never have to rely upon the welfare system. The first year I was here, I had to pay two lots of Taxes, one to the USA and the other to Australia. I have investments, which brings me a very nice income. A nice garden and plenty of tropical fruits, which I enjoy. I have settled in well, having a "Mate" from the Vietnam conflict, who has welcomed me into the local community. I have settled in well, but cannot wait for my Granson and his family to visit me once this pandemic is over. A hell of a beautiful place to live.

That's awesome Wayne. I'm in the process of trying to immigrate to Australia and getting a visa as a US citizen. Been here my whole life and I don't feel like my life is getting far in the US is it should. Especially quality of life and other reasons. I lost my job before the pandemic and a job offer. My heart is telling me to go to Australia and I'm Hispanic. I have my degree as well. I hate the work lifestyle here and how crap people that work in this country are treated. Inflation and other stuff aren't cutting it for me. I called and emailed the United Nations in NYC by Manhattan about my way of getting a visa for Australia so I can work and live there. Still waiting to see as well. I really want to go to Australia and try it out there for myself. After seeing videos of the country, I really like it for many reasons. Work Life balance, it's always warm, the weather climate is better, it's so chill out there and quality of life is better while you get a month off of work. 4 weeks off and in America you get two weeks. I know a few people that live in Australia because of my dad so I could actually do this. How is it for you and best tips? I got paper and documents to get a visa as well, so I wouldn't be undocumented. Please let me know how it was for you when you were in US and Australia. Thanks

Here’s some background for Australia’s 13 weeks of long service leave after 10 years on the job (it was originally after 15 years) Most Aussies had family in Europe which took 6 weeks to get to by ship. 6 weeks there, 6 weeks back, 1 week spent with your family. Some companies will have a Christmas shutdown and they can force you to take annual leave "where reasonable" (it depends on what industry agreement you're under). In a lot of cases you can opt to not be paid at all (unpaid leave) and bank your annual leave since it rolls over, although almost all private companies prefer you don't bank more than 6-8 weeks of leave since even if you don't take them they have to pay it all out when you leave that job.

@@twotravelingkings Hi guys, Just like America, Australia is a place of vast landscapes. We have different weather systems between the north and the south of the country. In winter here in Perth WA, it is the dry season in the northern regions, known as the Kimberley region. Which is a bit like Africa with its wildlife, landscapes and wild skies during the wet season that usually starts around November through to April. The best time up there is in April/May when it is still green from the wet, and the waterfalls are still running. APT Tours run tours up the Gibb River road, which is a good bucket list adventure. So hopefully these vaccines gives the world it's freedom to travel back. You are doing it in the right time while you are young, before those kids start coming into your lives.

As an American employer in Australia I can say first hand the lack of professionalism is a positive. The more more yourself the more genuine you're perceived, whereas here professionalism gets you nothing but distrust. Usually when I meet people of all kinds its less than 5 minutes and both parties are mates throwing around f-bombs and talking about random BS and being offered beers and nobody says no because no boss is gonna fire you or not have one themselves. I wouldn't own a business back in the usa not in a million yearsbI could never be that full of myself or treat my workers like indentured servants.

I think that's because the American accent is so easy to pick up and so hard to lose. My dad was the same. After growing up in the UK he went to the US at age 42 and never lost a bit of his British accent. I've been here 43 years and after 5 my sister in the US thought I sounded very Aussie, but no one here waits a second to recognise where I came from, just from certain words. But, apart from making an effort with "tomahto" and "al-you-minium", there's no point in "trying". You just have to be here long enough to absorb it through your skin.

I once had an (Aussie) acquaintance move to the US and he said, "It's great! One of the most stark differences is you can drink alcohol on the street, which you're now allowed to do in Aus!" Look, if it's a choice between being allowed to drink alcohol on the street, or having a work/life balance where I can take up to 4 weeks leave in a year, it's a no brainer. I can live without drinking alcohol on the street. I've heard so many anecdotes from Americans regarding leave ("I don't want to go to X wedding, it's going to take out a massive chunk of my leave days," "I desperately need a break, but I used up all my leave days when I was sick earlier this year,"), it sounds like such a toxic environment. Oh, and sick days are separate to the 4-weeks leave. So at any given point, the average Aussie has up to 50 days of (PAID) leave up their sleeve.

What I think Americans need to appreciate is that there is not just one type of Aussie accent. The East Coasters of Australia sound way different to those of us living in South Australia. They also use some different terms on the east coast compared to the middle of Australia. I can’t understand how families in America cope with a long summer break for their kids and yet only get two weeks paid leave how do they take care of their kids if they are out working. It seems to my untrained Australian eyes that the kids are not so well off in this respect in the US.

The Australian accent is really hard to imitate for Americans (and Brits) because it has such a flat R sound, and the sound is formed further back in the mouth. American English has a much stronger R sound spoken towards the front of the mouth and it’s much harder to flatten it than it is to emphasise it. A lot of vowels in Australian English are a bit flatter too which again is difficult for Americans/Brits when their pronunciation of vowels is naturally stronger.
@twotravelingkings

Yes great explanation! Thank you for sharing that. Someone we met also pointed out that the Australian accent comes from deeper in the throat whereas the American accent tends to be more nasally which we found to also be true! Thank you for your lack of judgement at our attempts at the accent 😊
