got to agree. I dont see anyone breaking that 100m record in the next 20 years. It is unheard of for athletes to improve as much as Bolt did in the 100m. On his side he barely ran the distance at a young age. Against Bolt is the fact that most of his team mates and nearly every single one of his close competitors got done for doping. Jamaica didnt test much and Bolt was injured a lot so probably wasn't on the test list for months at a time. “When people ask me about Bolt, I say he could be the greatest athlete of all time. But for someone to run 10.03 one year and 9.69 the next, if you don’t question that in a sport that has the reputation it has right now, you’re a fool. Period.” Carl Lewis "Usain Bolt was a gifted sprinter at junior level. Between 2007 and 2008, his sprinting ability improved drastically, to the consternation of pundits and experts. At the same time, the competitiveness of the entire Jamaican team improved, indicated by their increase in medals at major events. Bolt smashed world records and his fellow competitors by a huge margin in 2008 and 2009. Of the 8 fastest men ever recorded, he is the only one never to have tested positive for performance enhancing drugs. Of the 40 top times ever recorded at the 100 metres, he’s the only athlete not to have been caught doping. Sprinting has been mired in controversy and doping scandals throughout its history and into the present day. Large numbers of Jamaican sprinters have been caught doping, including his training partner. The coach of a number of these sprinters was the same as Bolt’s, Glen Mills. Jamaican athletics has a poor history of rigorous drug testing, so its possible that more athletes may have been cheating, but have slipped through the net." Jim Hines held the (first sub 10) 100m record of 9.95 for almost 15 years. Bolt's 9.58 needs to hold until May next year to be the longest held record. The closest athletes in the last 5 years are Coleman, Bromell and Kerley peaking at 9.76. Believe me, until until anyone can start approaching a sub 9.7, the golden boys of Powell, Bolt and Blake will remain untouchable. 200m is a different beast because it relies less on starts and other conditions and more on the endurance and speed of the athlete. If anything Bolt's record here is safer than the 100m. There seems to have emerged a new focus on 200m specialists, much like the unique position that Michael Johnson held as a 200/400 guy. No-one came within half a second of Johnson until 7 years after Atlanta when Xavier Carter hit 19.63, then Gay did 19.62 the following year and then it was the Bolt and Blake show. Gay did get to 19.58 in 2009 and Walter Dix got 19.52 in 2011. Fast forward to 2018 when Noah Lyles emerges and the needle starts to creep up. It was only last year when Lyles peaked at 19.31 that anyone other than Blake or Bolt had passed Michael Johnson's record. That's 26 YEARS. The majority of the top 200m in history tend to have a PB that stands head and shoulders above their 2nd best effort. Bolt's gap is 0.11 Blake's 0.18, Johnson a whopping 0.34. Lyles is 0.13. Gonna throw it out there and say Lyles has peaked and will never go sub 19.40 again in his career. Too early to call on Knighton and Tebogo. But whilst the current competition is exciting with more consistently mid 19 times than we've seen in history......it's still nowhere Bolt's record. It's been 13 years since Bolt went sub 19.20. It'll be another 13 years before anyone gets close.

quick update, Record-Setting 18-Year-Old sprinter Issam Asinga provisionally suspended for banned substance regarding the rest of the athletes mentioned, I am convinced that Knighton will be the next athlete to improve the 200m world record, probably next year at the olympics. Even if as you say, Tebogo has more chances because he ran several times under 10s in the 100m, I don't think it's essential to beat the 200m WR Pietro Mennea held the record for 17 years (more than anyone in history) and had a personal best of 10.01 in the 100m, Michael Johnson for 12 years, with a PB of 10.09 There are and have been many athletes who ran almost only 200m rather than 200m and 100m, and in some cases others who preferred the 400m as the second distance I would very much like Letsile Tebogo to be the new 200m world record holder and Olympic champion, there has never been an African athlete capable of doing it, even if many have come close In a certain sense Tebogo is an underdog who does not come from a country with a long tradition of sprinters, but if I have to bet I choose Erriyon Knighton in 2024

Tobogo and Knighton might have a shot in a few more years time but I don't think people truly realize just how far out there the 100m record especially, actually is. It's equivalent to a 9m+ long jump or a 42.75s 400m, it's unimaginable - and it was until that night he did it. Even video games wouldn't let you run under 9.65s or so back then. The 200m might be somewhat vulnerable to Knighton in a few years but to get to 9.5 you need a certain package of physical attributes that only one person who has ever lived had - and I doubt 3 or 4 guys at the same time will turn out to also have it. 9.70 can be achieved by normal really fast men, but bolt was different physiologically and biomechanically, which is why he was able to separate himself by generations in terms of times, despite running in the fastest, most talent-stacked generation of sprinters ever.

It feels like a linear comparison in this video while it is clearly not. It gets exponentially harder to nibble hundreds of a seconds from their times. Then looking at the physics of sprinting, they all miss the opportunities to increase their stride length. Bolt is huge, no other sprinter has overcome the 100 or 200m with as few steps as he has. Many proper times will come, but you need the physics of bolt to beat bolt.

Definitely agreed. Even if someone were to beat his 200m WR I still don't think they'd be as good as him at the 200m. If they smashed it, like 19.05, sure, but if someone runs like a 19.15~19.18 with a +1.0~+2.0 m/s tailwind that is overall a worse performance than a 19.19 into a slight headwind. Sure if Lyles is on a fast track like Eugene, improves his hundred to 9.7x, runs the race of his life with 1.6~2.0 m/s tailwind he might get a 19.17 or something, but with those same conditions Bolt would have been at low 19.0x or even 18.9x.

When he actually went all out the whole way he got the 9.58. I remember similar runs in the 2009 WCs 100/200 & 2012 Olympics 100/200. Tyson Gay/Yohan Blake/Justin Gatlin in 2012 also easily went through rounds coasting long distances, it really was the greatest era, at least for the 100m. Nah, his WRs were almost certainly the best times he could do. 2009 was his absolute peak, and in both his 100m and 200m WRs, he had near perfect races, from start to finish. @@jname9368 If you look at the replay, Bolt was looking at the clock at the final 5m and he did not try to incline his upper body to hit the finishing line. Usain Bolt's several meeting records in the 200 meters has been broken, particularly by Noah Lyles. This speaks volume of Noah Lyles standing as one of the all time greats. However to break or even equal Bolt's world record of 19.19 seconds needs Noah Lyles to shift a gear or two...which is very tough since he is almost at his prime. But with the likes of Erriyon Knighton and Letsilie Tebogo in the picture the scenario has changed...all the best to them all.
