Thank you for this. If you're careful, you don't need to cut all the wires. You can cut and shorten only the black and red, and leave all the rest intact.

Going to use this to mod the living crap out of my lenovo Idea-pad S145 crap-top. I will have one for a ventoy medium, one for an attiny 85, one for a USB to 3.5mm audio module, and one for a sim modem if I felt like it. I figured that it would just be interrupting the power Busses, thanks for the interesting demo. I did something similar with a USB 2.0 port on one of my old optiplex pcs back in the day to add in some cold storage and keep my data safe, as well as adding in some wifi / bluetooth. Just wondered if someone had taken the time to add a simpe switch concept to a cable as a good place to start. Subbed to the channel.

I'm a total beginner with electronics. I can repair, but not build circuits. I only really understand the battery diagram and some basic capacitor and resistor type stuff. I've got a question to askthat I hope you can answer. I want to do something like this but for physically powering up and turning off a rasperry pi 3b in a custom project that I'm building. The switch will be mounted on the Megadrive mould I'm using (drilling a hole and screwing it on) that is recoloured and redesigned. The 3b has a micro USB female and the plug that comes with my Pi accessories is Micro-USB male to 3-pin male electric plug. I want to buy a 'Latching Push Button Switch, Pin Jack Self Lock 3A Silver Contact Material 4 Pin Button Switch for LED Light(white, 9-30V)' The switch in question that I'm buying has + and - terminals, but only 2. Your on/off switch above has 2 sets (+/- on left and +/- on the right - 4 altogether). My plan is to expose the shielding like above and screw the positives into the single + terminal (I could solder, but I'd imagine using small conduction screws would be much easier and less of a disaster with my not so good soldering skills) and the black ones to the single - terminal. Question is, would this work? I see no reason why not, but was concerned that doing it this way would create a short. Also, you'll see there are 2 copper coloured terminals. Are these for the LED? If so, how would I go about getting these set up? Additionally, don't suppose you know if these switches have inbuilt resistance to stop the LEDs from overloading? Sorry for the long question, but I'm hoping you may be able to help me

Hey, late response but it may help, it your switch only has two terminals just cut the red wire and solder one end to each terminal, and keep the ground (black) untouched.

Hello ! Thanks for sharing this. I am thinking about doing something like this, but looking at USB specifications, I can see that in theory, power should be connected or cut before data lines are connected or cut. Your device only cut power without cutting data lines, did you experienced any issues with that as time went by ?
@LukeLorusso

Hey! I actually use this switch for my external HDD (now an SSD). No issues so far, but it must be said that I always disconnect (eject) my device before switching off... I don't exclude it might be some issue though if you don't previously disconnect it, cause of the rule you read in the specs

what about putting a pull up resistor on your D+ with a momentary button so you can leave it plugged in and powered up and just have the protocol identify it and reconnect again when ever it loses connection? or were you specifically trying to cut the power? is that possible?
@LukeLorusso

I guess you can try to do that! It's not ideal for me, cause I don't like wasting energy on things I don't use, but it's an interesting question :)

What if it’s only red and black, and the switch only has one piece of metal on each side instead of the two screws like you have
@LukeLorusso
3 жыл бұрын
what "it's only red and black"? if you mean that only 2 cables are present, then it's a charging-only cable, where the red one is the positive and the black one is the ground. About the switch, sorry I don't understand: you mean that only one side is "switchable" and the other isn't? in that case, you only need to switch the black one; the red one can stay linked
