I own the VE300 for years now, never had a problem with the connector. For me as an administrator it's the most used external HDD i own. :D Also you can store the last used ISO by selecting the ISO and pushing the silver button on top for like 5 seconds, the device will then store the info and requests to plug out the device. but on next startup it remembers the selected ISO.

Just stumbled upon this vid after watching your 486 restoration vids and Holy Moly that sounds like an absurdly useful device. :D I'll echo some of the other posters here in saying i had no clue such a thing even existed. After the video i was straight on google to find one to buy, this will save me so much time faffing about finding a suitable size USB thumb-drive then writing disk images to them... Thank you so much for posting this.

CD's are on their way out. Eventually finding a device capable of reading optical media will be just as hard as getting a functioning floppy. This looks like a great device, yet it's just a step short of doing what Gotek USB floppy emulator does. I'm just hoping that in the next few years they make a CD / ISO equivalent of Gotek, only with an IDE interface. No physical CD's - just a drive emulator. Older DOS era gear would benefit greatly from such a device, as it is not often able to handle the overhead associated with emulation. We need a drive like the Zalman, only without a USB, and preferably mountable into a 5.25 or 3.5 drive bay. DRM management would be a pain to emulate though. Different CD's (especially with games) relied on various methods of authentication. Dummy bits, phantom sector tables etc. An ISO recording process typically is not able to replicate copyright protection. That's why I'm still holding onto all of my old original discs, despite having backed all of them up as ISO's also. So, although appealing, an IDE CD emulator is probably a long way off, but it is needed.

As per the video the iodd version is the original product. Zalman discontinued their models after loosing the license I think. There is a new version available that uses M2 solid state drives and restores the encryption. You can pick these up on Amazon, it's called the iODD mini. Also worth noting that you can mount VHD and floppy images with the Zalman. I've used the floppy emulation on the dreaded press F6 to install driver file in windows for example.

I have the ZM-VE300, this drive's predecessor. It is, to be blunt, the most useful external drive I have ever owned, especially in my life as a sysadmin. One thing to watch for, is while NTFS supports "sparse" files, the CD emulation doesn't, it just pretends the gaps aren't there at all, so you need to ensure you never write a sparse file if you want it to work. This is achieved in Linux using: cp --sparse=never ....

Went and bought this from EBay immediately after I saw this. I literally just spent a full day building a "retro game" machine (i5 2+ghz, 8gig of memory, running 32-bit XP -- I know, I know.. Only 3 gig available) after finding out that I had no working CDRom drive in the house, the burnable CDs I know I have, have disappeared, and copying the XP files to the fastest USB2.0 key I have was just murder. What would make this 100% better is that if the firmware also offered the ability to virtualize floppy disks as well. Get back to DOS3.1 with ease. :]

According to the manual of the IODD 2531 and 2541, they support ISO for virtual CD, VHD for virtual HDD, RMB for virtual USB Flash Drive and IMA for virtual Floppy! They all go into the _iso directory. Maybe this is also supported by the Zalman. If not, you may also be able to flash the IODD firmware since the devices look identical.

To add onto my comment, I have the unit, with an SSD in it, and I'm no where near liking the rocker switch. Should have been button operated, and I may rewire mine up to be such a beast. Other than that, its a FANTASTIC addition to my tool chest. Between running tools to image drives, or, dropping driver tools on for those older machines (www.lifewire.com/free-driver-updater-tools-2619206 -- I have Snappy on the unit) for WinXP+, its fantastic.

Most USB flash drives can be reprogrammed to emulate CD drives using flash controller manufacturer's MPT tools. Some controller OEMs (for example Innostor) even provide end-user tools to do this without any hacking. I actually use a couple of modded USB drives with CD-ROM emulation for servicing PCs.

It's a cd drive emulator. You would use it in the same circumstances you may need a cd drive you can boot from. This behaviour can be emulated with a usb stick etc with varying degrees of success depending on the device you're booting. This device is much more compatible.

Generally 486 and earlier computers don't have a USB port so yes that's not really going to work with the exception of some embedded systems. In those cases a boot floppy with CDROM driver such as the Win98 boot disk and a regular CDROM are in order, or an external CDRom on the parallel port like those Iomega and others used to produce.

Thanks a lot for this video. i've been struggling at first with a fistful of USBs and then with one drive with Easy2Boot which is a ridiculous chore to set up. This seems like a godsent to me as an IT support who need lots of ISOs. Say, have you encountered something that it can't boot? I see that it can do everything between XP and W10 which is my bread and butter but how about all those bootleg tool ISOs like Hiren and UBCD? And one more thing, can it instal modern windows in UEFI mode?

I own the Zal,an VE-300. This works with many images. Floppy images included. I even used it to restore a very old iMac. I use an SSD for mine. Some older systems don’t like the dual mode, so I stick it in ODD only to get an operating system loaded. I tested it with a BlueRay disc image and it works flawlessly. These devices are called “iODD” drives. In fact, Zalman rebrands the device and has slightly different firmware. The company that makes it is here: iodd.kr/
